USB3.1 Compliant ESD/TVS diode for USB2.0 application - Reg.

Hi Team,

Shall I use USB3.1 (Gen1/Gen2) compliant ESD/TVS diodes for USB2.0 application?

If I can use, what are all the parameters I need to check?

Regards,

  • Hi Santhana,

    Welcome to E2E!

For USB3.1 applications the capacitance of the device is very important to not affect signal integrity of the high speed interface. The data speeds in USB2.0 are much slower so the same device can be used. A device with a higher capacitance could also be used if beneficial to the system(e.g. higher ESD protection, price, etc.)

Key parameters to check in a system would be the reverse stand off voltage (or working voltage), the IEC 61000-4-2 ESD protection capabilities of the device, the clamping voltage of the device, and the capacitance.
