FDC2114EVM: EVM Gui showing disconnected

Part Number: FDC2114EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: FDC2114, FDC2214

I got a FDC2114 EVM board

Can you please help me debug this issue ,

I am unable to get the EVM connected on GUI as shown below

Even though I have connected the EVM and the green light is glowing on the EVM.

Also I want to show a demo to my metering customer on touch sensing from 2 -3 Cm away ,

If you can help me set up the EVM board I will try to get the EVM on the meter to show a live demo

Thank you

  • Hi Shreenidhi,

Can you try running the GUI as an administrator on the PC?

The GUI communicates to the EVM using a COM port, you can go into Device Manager in your windows PC and verify the EVM shows up under teh COM ports section as "EVM" COM XX.

I would also ensure there aren't any other programs running on your computer that maybe keeping the COM port open.

    Regards,

    Varn.
  • Thank you so much

I could get the EVM working and was able to sense touch application

I was trying to use this in metering application ,
and i am planning to sense cap touch from a distance of 2 - 3 Cm
Currently i do not get such range
can you please help me make the changes so as to enable it to sense touch from a distance of 3Cm

    Thank you
  • Hi Shreenidhi,

Are you just using the FDC EVM sensors? The sensitivity of a system depends on the sensor size and the presence of any ground planes in proximity to the sensor. A bigger sensor results in higher sensitivity and any GND planes nearby the sensor decrease the sensitivity.

When you say you can't get such range, what do you mean? Are you looking at the raw code change? If so, what value of raw code change or PPM shift do you need for the application?

Can you post pictures of your setup?

    Regards,

    Varn.

  • thanks a lot Varn ,

Currently i am using your FDC2114 EVM only .

So for my metering application i need a touch button application for distance of 3CM ,

Can you please recommend the sensors/ changes which i need to implement to get FDC toggling for distance of 3 CM

  • Please help me out here
  • Hi Shreenidhi,

When I plug in a FDC2214/FDC2114 EVM and bring my finger close to the sensor I can see the code shift significantly at 3-4 cm away with the default settings. What exactly are you having issues with?

Like I said can you post pictures of your setup? What is your end goal?

    Regards,

    Varn.

  • Hi Shreenidhi,

As Varn mentioned, the mechanical setup is very important in sensing applications. Please make sure the EVM and USB cable is taped down properly, and you are not getting any noise due to mechanical vibration.

Also, unplug the laptop power cord during your test, because some laptop power cords may introduce additional noises.

If you still cannot achieve a few cm range, then please use FDC2214 instead of FDC2114.
