FDC2214: How to use FDC2214 for my particular design

Hello,

I am working on a design where i need to use sensors for proximity distance sensing. I hope this can be done by using FDC2214 chip. But I need some help with the implementation of the other components.

refer to the image below for my design requirements:-

Here are my doubts:-

1. Can I attach copper plates on the surfaces A and B and connect them with FDC2214 and measure the proximity at given time?

2. What is the minimum change in distance I can measure?

3. How should I attach copper plates on the plastic surface?

Please Help me out.

  • Hi Aman,

    The performances of capacitive sensing applications depend a lot on the mechanical setup and system noise floor. I suggest that you do a quick test to check the feasibility. You can attach some copper sensors to the setup and measure the noise floor and active signal using the EVM.

    Could I attach the copper sensor at the surface of the plastic gripper to create the resonance pattern and connect it to the FDC2214 IC (without mounting it on the surface - shown in the image above).

    P.S. :- pardon the complex nature of my queries, I am still learning and building.

    Yes, you can glue or tape the copper foils to the plastic surface.

    I have some more queries.

    1. In regards to the schematic as given in the datasheet

    Is it required as per my condition to use two LC circuits ?

    Will they need to be mounted opposite to each other to measure the resonance ?

    2. What is the inductor & capacitor value to be used in the LC circuit?

    3. What is the resistor values for the unspecified values in the circuit?

    4. Is there any minimum thickness of the copper plate required? or can I use copper tape as well?
