FDC2114EVM: Custom Sensor connection

Part Number: FDC2114EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: FDC2214

Hi,

I am new to capacitive sensing and hence the question may be of basic level. I am interested in studying the capacitance of custom design sensors using the EVM. Considering the mutual capacitance matrix sensor as example (attached image), I am wondering how this external sensor be connected to the channel. To elaborate, out of the two points given on the EVM's channel for connection, which one would be Rx and which one Tx?

Thanks

N.

  • Hi Nimra,

The FDC2214 does not have an Rx or a Tx pin for the sensor. The device measures changes in the resonant frequency of the external LC tank, and the sensor capacitor is connected directly to this LC tank. For each channel, you could connect your sensor to either signal in the associated connector footprint; it does not matter which side of the LC tank the sensor capacitor is connected to.

Also, resonant-based capacitive sensing is unique to TI. Most capacitive sensors measure the movement of charge. If you are interested in learning more about resonant sensing and its benefits, this app note is a good introduction.

    Regards,
