Hi, I want to create a simple front-panel touch switch for industrial equipment. Any technology is OK (capacitive, inductive, etc.), but must be robust enough to ignore normal ESD emissions, and only trigger on a finger touch. What are my T/I options for this? The inductive technology (LDC1312) looks promising, but is expensive for a simple switch application. Any thoughts? Thanks, JL

Hi John,
Both FDC (cap sensing) and LDC (inductive sensing) technology can be used for controls. The LDC can be used to detect actual movement/deflection of a target; with LDC technology you can use a solid sheet of metal, with sections allocated as 'buttons'; and when a user presses on the button area, the small deflection of the metal (typically a few microns) can be readily detected.
As for ESD considerations, the LDC has a 1kV ESD rating; and the sensor can be designed so that it is completely insulated and/or enclosed in a farady shield.

Thanks Chris. What would be our lowest-cost solution for simple front-panel touch switches? Any tutorial guides addressing touch switches?

Unfortuantely, I don't have a good answer for this. Considerations include the number of buttons, the sensing characteristic you desire (sample rate, sensistivity...), and the environment you are working in.
