Interference by touching cable

Hi,

I'm investigating the cable to avoid interference by touching cable.

I found 2 following threads, the above one recommends UTP(unshielded twisted pair), the below one recommends  2-condutor shielded cable.

Which information should I refer shielded or unshielded?

  • Hello Kuramochi-san,
most applications use tightly twisted unshielded cable (UTP). You may want to increase the sensor capacitor to reduce the capacitive effect of the cable by comparison.

You can also use shielded cable and connect the shield to GND, but shielded cable is more affected by bending (vibrations) and temperature effect because the capacitance of the shielded cable changes.
  • Ben-san,

    Thank you for your advice.
My customer has already used the UTP cable.
Do you have any other corresponding for touching the cable?
I have told about a larger sensor capacitor to my customer.
And is there any required information to advise?

    Best Regards,
    Kuramochi
  • Hello Kuramochi-san,
if cables are used, I recommend gluing them down in the system to prevent them from moving which changes its capacitance and could be misinterpreted as an inductive change. Apart from that, I recommend waiting for the customer's response on whether or not increasing the sensor capacitor helped with their issue.
