Eddy currents for measuring metal thickness

Dear Sirs

I would like to do something that might not be possible.

I would like to measure the thickness of metal, 20-50mm.

Ultrasonic sensors does that easily but as I understand piezo elements are fragile and my equipment will be exposed to high G-forces, shock, so I was looking into eddy current measurements.

I am not interested in measure distance to metal. My sensor will be inside the metal and I would like to measure the thickness of the metal to the surface ( wear sensor).

If distance 20-50mm is totally impossible then I could settle with just detecting that we have reached 20mm.

To further complicate things, the circuit is powered from a small battery and the coil must be small.

Is this at all possible?

Thanks

/Dan
