IWR1443: Where is the API for the phase shifter?

Hi there

Since there is a phase shifter in each transmitting channel, I want to steer the direction of beam by changing the phase of each channel. However, I cannot find the corresponding API. Can you tell me where can I find it?

Another question, based on the MMW demo, TI does the frequency domain beamforming for the received data without transmitting beamforming. Since there is a phase shifter for each channel, why the demo conducts the receiving beamforming instead of tranmistting beamforming? Are there any considerations?

And also, where is the Technical Reference Manual for each of xWR14/16 chips? What I can find is just the datasheet.

Hello,

Beam forming via phase shifting is not supported on IWR1443.

Device Technical Reference Manual can be found under "Technical Documents" tab of product page : www.ti.com/.../technicaldocuments

In the IWR1443 datasheet it says that "The IWR1443 transmit subsystem consists of three parallel transmit chains, each with independent phase and amplitude control. " Also, as the picture showing below, is the function cycled in blue phase shifter?

Hello Xining,

That is 0/180 phase shifter which allows Binary Phase modulation and is intended to be used for interference detection and not for beam forming.

The Tx Phase shifter is part of the AWR1243, this is not used within the IWR1443.

The SWRU522 is the document for the TRM. Technical Reference Manual for IWR devices.

Hello, I suspect there are some typos in some documents as I could see the below:

- Both the AWR1443 and IWR1443 datasheets, section 6.4.1.2, says "transmit beamforming can be achieved by programming the phase shifter of the individual chains".
- The corresponding section (6.3.1.2) of the AWR1243 datasheet does not mention such capability.

Could we have a clear statement of which members of the AWR and the IWR families support TX phase shift control?

And also, the phase shifter only provides two phase offset--0 and 180 degree. I think this should be specified clearly too. Unless, previously, I was thinking the phase shifter would support phase offset from 0 to 180 degrees.

Hello,

The AWR1243 device has Tx phase shifter, and Binary Phase Modulation. The other devices AWR1642, IWR1642, AWR1443, IWR1443 all contain Binary Phase Modulation. The text is being clarified in the next device datasheets.

The BPM and linear phase shifter are in a generic phase shift (delay block).

In the current datasheet release for the AWR1243 the Tx phase shifter is not listed, it will be in the future variant device AWR1243P.
This is why only BPM Binary Phase Modulation is listed for the Tx shifter operation for xWR1443 and xWR1642.
