OPT8241-CDK-EVM: QUESTIONS ABOUT TI'TOF PRODUCTS & OPT8241-CDK-EVM

Part Number: OPT8241-CDK-EVM

Hi~
We are interested in TI's TOF scheme.
Our application focus on household robot/sweeper.
Our ranging aim is to achieve mapping(slam),make the robot walking autonomously.
Now we are using trianulation ranging principle in our projects.
We see TI's ranging scheme is based on TOF.In our understanding ,TOF should be prior to triangulation ranging in precision.
So we hope to see the scheme.
Currently,we focus on--
1.In door application:
The maximum ranging is between 2m~5m
2.Error precision:
In our opinion,ToF's precision not rely on the ranging distance, and it should be in millimeter class.Right?
3.Ranging angle:
At present,we think TI's TOF ranging object is a "320x240"plane,if our understanding right,we want to know the angle of ranging.
In common, as for ToF method, in case the object being a point ,there will be no angle problem and the most care should be about the freshing frequency.
But in case of the object being a plane, we would need the ranging angle, and the horizontal ranging angle should be over 60 degree.
4.Refresh rate:
As mentioned in item '3', your scheme should be a plane ranging,so there is no more requirement on the refresh rate.
But if it is kind of a point ranging, the refresh rate should be over 1000 per second.
5.
Laser Safety:According to USA FDA on laser's certification, would it can acheive CLASS 1 for a safety laser.
Laser wavelength.
Laser optical power.
6.Optical lens:
As the reception object is a plane, what kind of lens should be choose to use with it?
Thank you and looking for your kindly reply.
  • 1.In door application:
The maximum ranging is between 2m~5m
    >> This is achievable with TI-3DTOF

    2.Error precision:
In our opinion,ToF's precision not rely on the ranging distance, and it should be in millimeter class.Right?
    >> Typically 1% of max range (unambiguous range).

    3.Ranging angle:
At present,we think TI's TOF ranging object is a "320x240"plane,if our understanding right,we want to know the angle of ranging.
    >> If by "angle of ranging" you mean field-of-view (FOV) then the answer is FOV is determined by the lens used. You can chose different FOV lens.

In common, as for ToF method, in case the object being a point ,there will be no angle problem and the most care should be about the freshing frequency.
    >> It's unclear what you mean here. Perhaps you are comparing TOF with triangulation ranging?
But in case of the object being a plane, we would need the ranging angle, and the horizontal ranging angle should be over 60 degree.

    4.Refresh rate:
As mentioned in item '3', your scheme should be a plane ranging,so there is no more requirement on the refresh rate.
But if it is kind of a point ranging, the refresh rate should be over 1000 per second.
    >> it is "plane ranging", frame rate if 120fps for our 320x240 product (OPT8241), and 1000 fps for our 80x60 product (OPT8320)

    5.
Laser Safety:According to USA FDA on laser's certification, would it can acheive CLASS 1 for a safety laser.
    Laser wavelength.
    Laser optical power.
    >> It is possible; in fact our OPT8241-CDK uses laser and is Class-1. All the parameters you mentioned factors into Class-1 certification.

    6.Optical lens:
As the reception object is a plane, what kind of lens should be choose to use with it?
    >> Usually a M10 lens with F1.1 or F1.2 f-number. Must have good relative illumination, low distortion (not fisheye); need ARC coating.
    >> CRA < 30 degree, lower the better. Project image area is 1/6" diagonal for OPT8320, and 1/3" for OPT8241.
