AFE4490SPO2EVM: AFE4490SPO2EVM USB connection and powering problem. Thanks!

Tile: AFE4490SPO2EVM USB connection and powering problem. Thanks!

Hi TI experts,

I am trying to connect AFE4490SPO2EVM  with Arm TivaC LaunchPad, via USB port. The questions are as follows:

1) Can I connect the EVM with Launchpad, as USB slave and master, respectively ?

2) How to power EVM, since its USB is connected with Launchpad, no PC? How to connect external battery, and configure the board for power source selection?

3) How to power the Launchpad? Since there are two USB ports on Launchpad, can I use one to connect with EVM, and another to get the power? Or I need use external battery and how?

Thank you very much. Waiting for reply since we need to determine the solution and purchase the product now.

Best

Jackie

  • Hi Jackie,

We have received your inquiry about operating the AFE4490EVM with Tiva Launchpad.
The device applications engineer will get back to you soon.
  • Hi Jackie,

Here are the answers regarding AFE4490.
    1) The AFE4490EVM has on board MSP430 MCU, which is programmed as USB's CDC class. So if you want to control this MCU with external launchpad you have to program this MCU as well with the respective code.
    2) The power for the AFE4490EVM is derived from USB using on board regulators. If you want to give external power you have to give it through the USB, but doing so looses the data communication with the MSP.

Regarding the queries related to launchpad, I will let other engineers form that team to answer.

  • Hi Prabin

Thank you for your helpful information!

Continue with the two questions related to EVM:

    1) Yes, I will use MSP430 MCU to communicate with TivaC launchpad, via USB. 430 will be USB device in this case. Can you please let me know, where I can get the USB drive for this function (USB CDC class?)?

    2) To power the EVM, I am thinking the Tiva launchpad can send the power via USB to EVM. Just not sure what is the highest current needed by EVM?

Besides, the USB usually uses 5 volts. If I use 4.5 or 6.5 volts, will this cause EVM damage?

    Thank you!
