As you see, regardless of what finger is placed, the pattern seems almost identical when using SPH7050's Red LED.

I have uploaded the data file. Also, each data are near the limit (2^24 or -2^24).

Is my sensor saturated? Should I change the settings for TIAGAIN and TIA_AMB_GAIN?

Hi David,

Looking at the waveforms for the RED, it seems to be saturated at -1.2V.
Have you connected cathode of photodiode to INP pin of AFE?
You can remove the saturation by lowering the LED current and TIA_GAIN.

Can you help me find the section in the datasheet where it explains the relationship between LED current, TIA_GAIN, and saturation?

I wish to know why this module has become saturated at -1.2V, not to 1.2V.

Well, I really wish to check this connection. But this custom module I bought doesn't have any test points or have a way to probe each INP pin (ball grid) and the cathode pin.

I referred this configuration. Since I wrote 0x011414ul to LEDCNTRL register (LED_RANGE[1:0] = 01, LED1 = 0x14, LED2 = 0x14),

you mean I should write a lower value like this?

By the way, are both LED2 and LED1 data saturated (DIFFERENTIAL INPUT VOLTAGE AT ADC INPUT -1.2V = 22-BIT ADC OUTPUT CODE 1000000000000000000000)?

Hi David,

You can refer to section 8.3.1.1 of the datasheet to find the relation between AFE's output, TIA_Gain and photodioide current.
Photodiode current is related to LED current by a factor called CTR (Current Transfer Ratio).
Yes, you can write lower values to those register to avoid the saturation.
You can even lower the Rf, LED_RANGE.

Hi David,

Can you please set the LED current to 0 and cover the photodiode with some object to block ambient light.
In this case we should get the output ~0V.

Good point.

I covered the custom AFE4403 module in this case. Hope this is enough to block ambient lights.

Also, the registers are configured as

TIA_AMB_GAIN - ambdac = 0uA

LEDCNTRL - LED range = 00

LEDCNTRL - LED1 = 0x00

LEDCNTRL - LED2 = 0x00

We expected 0 reading. However, sadly, the same thing happened.

Then, looks like this module has some flaws, right?

Hi David,

Yes, looks like your module is faulty.
Setting LED current to 0 means LEDCNTRL -LED1/LED2 = 0.
I have following suggestions based on previous observations.
1) Remove sensor module ( looks like you have wire connection) and check the output.
2) If you see the same output, generate the register settings from the AFE4403EVM's GUI. You can use the default setting and try.
