OPT8241: If it possible to use higher sensor resolution imaging array such as 640*480

Part Number: OPT8241

Hi Team,

If it possible to use higher sensor resolution imaging array such as 640*480 with our device (we can compromise with a lower framerate as 30fps)?

please advise back, thanks in advance.

Best regards,

Shai

  • Hi Shai,

I am sorry but I have not understood your question properly. As you might know OPT8241 is a ToF sensor with a resolution of 320x240 pixels. TI does not have a ToF sensor with higher resolution as of now. Kindly explain your application scenario and spec requirements and we might be able to give you better suggestions.

  • Nithin Hello,

Sorry for not been clear before, my customer in the field of autonomous robots, and has a requirement for high precision measurement of distance.
I know that the device is limited to 320x240, but sicne the ability of working with high speed of framerate, I thought maybe we could get higher resolution with some tarde off regrading the framerate response.
Just to note one of the applications is to pass through a narrow gap that the robot has a 1 cm gap to maneuver on each side.
That's why the customer wants to work with a camera with higher resolution to achieve this accuracy, the distances he need to required are 1.5 to 2 meters.
Can you please suggest a solution that can meet these requirements.
    Thanks in advance,

    Best regards,
    Shai
  • Hi Shai,

I think this is possible with use of 320X240 sensor. Please use the system estimator tool and you can change the FoV and the maximum distance settings in the estimator tool. www.ti.com/.../sbac124
For the distance and FoV setting, you will be able to see the X-Y resolution at max distance. This is indicative of the XY resolution and you can see if the resolution is big enough for you to detect gaps of 1cm. I think you should be able to do this with 320X240.

TI does not have a 640 X 480 resolution sensor. This sensor's XY spatial resolution cannot be improved by trading off the frame rate. You can, however, improve the Z resolution by reducing the frame rate. You would generally notice that the z resolution limits the measurement than the XY resolution. So I think you would be able to use this solution.

  • Subhash, Thanks for your response.
the customer will investigate this solution in more depth.
