LM96080 IIC lockup protection function

To tech support team,

One of our customer is using both LM80 and LM96080, and they find that there is a small possibility of IIC lockup issue when using LM80, whereas no any issue when using LM96080.

we check the difference between these two devices, we see that LM96080 does implement a TIMEOUT to protect IIC lockup issue. We support it should meet some lockup issue before.

Would you please tell me :

1. Why this feature was asked on this LM96080?

2. For LM80 IIC lockup issue, what kinds of reasons would cause LM80 lockup and only reset could recover this issue ?

Hi Gerry,

A lockup is something that can happen on the I2C bus if one of the lines is held down by a device for too long.
The LM96080 is an improved revision of the LM80 and one of the items that was added is the timeout function. The timeout function makes it possible for the I2C bus to go back to normal operation without having to turn off the device.

thanks for reply.

Once the IIC lockup, normally it could be recovered by continuously issuing start command, right ? why LM80 can not be recovered in this way? could you tell me once it is lockup, how would it recover ? only re-start whole device ?

Hi Gerry,

Yes, I think that is the only way, by restarting the device. You cannot recover it by sending a start command because one of the lines is stuck low.
