TMP107: How to connect single sensor to standard UART host

Part Number: TMP107
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TMP104,

Hi, the datasheet mentions "The robust UART-compatible SMAART wire interface transfers data over a single wire" but doesn't show an example of connecting a UART host to just one sensor, for which I assume pin I/O1 simply becomes equivalent to TX and I/O2 becomes equivalent to RX, or vice-versa, and no tri-state buffer or other external components are required?  Am I misunderstanding?  I want to read from this sensor using an FPGA's programmable software UART interface.

Thanks.
