TDC7201: TDC7201 question

Part Number: TDC7201
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC7200,

Dear All:

I have some question about TDC7201 spec as below.

Please kinldy provide your suggestion for our check again.

Thanks your help.

1. For Mode1 used, why does the standard deviation get ramp up from 800ns to 2000ns on Fig. 22 as below.

2. When use mode 2, if have Standard Deviation vs Measured Time-of-Flight waveform for reference first and can't find it on spec.

3. TDC7201 support TDC1/ TDC2 for different channel, may I setup different Edge Trigger for Rising/ Falling at two channel? Whether have any risk issue when using different edge trig?

EX: TDC1 setup to Rising Edge for Start/ Stop and TDC2 setup to Falling Edge for Star/ Stop as below.

  • Hello,

    1. For mode 1 a ring oscillator is used, and as the counting time increases the oscillator heats up, which increases the jitter and therefore the standard deviation. It is not recommended to use mode 1 for measurements greater than 500ns.

    2. There is not currently a chart that shows the standard deviation of the mode 2 measurement vs time of flight. The standard deviation remains relatively constant over time, but is affected by the frequency of the input clock as shown in Figure 20 on page 12 of the datasheet.

    3. You can set up the edge triggers to be different between the two channels with no problems.

  • Hi Scott,
I have two question as below.
    1. If using 16MHz oscillator with TDC7200, will the resolution enhance?
    2. If customer need start from 0ns at Combine mode, how can implement it? Does it need to use two pcs TDC7201 IC implement?

    Regards,
    Eric
  • Hi Eric,

I have responded to these questions in your followup thread here: e2e.ti.com/.../619488
