TDC1000 for distance measurement

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TDC1000

Hi

We have a requirement  Distance measurement (through air) from 0-150mm with an accuracy of 0.5mm in a new product design.
We are considering TDC1000 for same. Can you suggest any ultrasonic sensor that is suitable for above requirement and compatible with TDC1000.

  • Hi Hanish,

Based on your resolution requirement, you would need a transducer with a resonant frequency of at least 686kHz (this is calculated by dividing the speed of sound through air, 343 m/s, by your accuracy requirement of 0.5mm). I would recommend this 750kHz transducer from Steminc. If the 2cm diameter is too large, there are smaller diameter transducers available with 1MHz resonant frequencies. At longer distances you might need to worry about the higher frequency signal attenuating, but at distances up to 150mm this won't be a problem.

Also, you noted that your application requires distance measurement at 0mm. The transducer will not be able to sense an object making contact with it. This is because once the transducer has finished bursting, there is a ring-down period during which it is difficult to detect an echo. If your application must measure distances at 0mm, I would suggest recessing your transducer. This will allow the ring-down period to finish before the transducer detects any echoes. You can subtract the amount it is recessed from the final distance calculations.

    Regards,
