CCS/TDC7200: What is the circuit structure of TDC7200/7201?

Hi there,

I am using TDC7200EVM & MSP430F5529LP to measure TOF and I want to increase the performance in terms of FWHM timing resolution and DNL of the system. My current idea is further calibrating the results in digital domain, therefore I need to understand the circuit structure of TDC7200/7201 deepler.

My questions are:

(1) Could you please tell me the circuit structure of TDC7200? I have read the "Time to Digital Converters" by Stephen Henzler

Is TDC7200 a "Looped Time-to-Digital Converter" described in section 4.2?

(2) Are there any other ways to improve the FWHM timing resolution and DNL performance of the system?

I saw the block diagram on the users guide, but I want to know more about how the TDC core works, for instance,

(a) Is there a fine counter or the ring osc works as a fine counter?

(b) What is inside the coarse counter and how does it works?

a & b ) Coarse counter is a ring osc

Refer Fig 15 in the TDC7200 DS: www.ti.com/.../tdc7200.pdf
The best way to improving the performance is by using the higher freq clock input

except for using a higher freq clock, is there and other way to further improve the performance? Like post-processing the digital results ?

Yi Tian,

Using higher frequency is only way to improve the performance.
