AWR1243: mmWave Studio. Problems with connection (SPI and Ethernet)

Part Number: AWR1243
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , UNIFLASH

We have had many problems with connecting the AWR1243 and DCA1000 with our computers in mmWave Studio

  1. the SPI connect button (or command in Lua scripts called “ar1.PowerOn”) does not work. We keep getting error: Run out of time
    1. This recently has been happening more than half the time we try to connect.

  2. the Ethernet connection
    1. Keep getting errors that Ethernet connection is down. “Ethernet plug is disconnected”
    2. The Ethernet chord is definitely plugged in and based on information we see in wireShark as well as LED's on the ethernet port, the computer is seeing the Ethernet connection

In both these cases, turning on and off everything tends to help the situation, but not always. If there is anything that is known to fix these connection issues, it would be greatly appreciated!

  • Yuji,

Included in the installation of mmWave Studio is a script that is designed to be used with the DCA1000 along with an mmWave EVM. You can find it here: C:\ti\mmwave_studio_01_00_00_00\mmWaveStudio\Scripts

Please try to use this script to attempt the capturing of raw data.

This could be related to a firmware mismatch based on the silicon version you have. This forum has addressed this particular question in the past. Feel free to search through this forum on this question and see previously posted answers.

  • Hi Kyle,

Thanks for the response. We have tried using the demo script that I believe you are talking about. (DataCaptureDemo_xWR.lua). As seen above, it has failed. I have provided the the versions of all our hardware and software below. Can you also give me the link for the e2e posts about the firmware mismatch? I could not find it searching myself.

The version of the hardware and software we are using is:

    AWR1243 version:

    AWR1243BOOST serial numbers: 5099100248, and 5099100293

    DCA1000 version:

    DCA1000 serial numbers: 1918DCA1000EVM0230, and 1918DCA1000EVM0100

    Mmwave Studio version: 1.0.0.0

    Laptops:

    (1) Windows 10 home, intel i5-7200U CPU @2.5GHz  2.7GHz, 8 GB memory

    (2) Windows 8.1, intel i5-425U CPU @ 2.4GHZ  2.4GHz, 8GB memory

    Thnak you so much

  • Yuji,

In your hardware setup, do you have jumpers placed on both SOP0 and SOP1? This configuration is required when using mmWave Studio.

If you are using the script, then it will automatically identify which version of the firmware that should be downloaded onto the device.

For future reference, the serial numbers do not provide any usable information on this forum and we do not have access to serial numbers. The device markings would be more relevant.

    Regards,
    Kyle
  • Hi Kyle,

Yes the SOP's are in the right spots.

What device markings are you referring to?

Could you also link the posts that you are referring to in your first reply? "This forum has addressed this particular question in the past. Feel free to search through this forum on this question and see previously posted answers."

    Thank you!

  • Yuji,

I am referring to the markings on the actual chip. You will need to determine which revision of silicon you have for your device. Determining the silicon version is a topic that has been addressed previously on this forum and I encourage you to search through this forum.

Similarly, the topic of firmware mismatch has also been addressed on this forum. Determining the correct firmware version for your device is a topic that has been addressed previously on this forum and I encourage you to search through this forum.

  • Hi Kyle,

The marking on the 1243 is 74ZE0F9. I believe this means that it is version 2.

When you say firmware are you talking about the BSS and MSS files? We always make sure to use ES2.0 versions of those.

    Thanks

  • Yuji,

The DataCaptureDemo_xWR.lua script is a robust script capable of handling all of the AWR devices in our portfolio. If this script is raising errors, then you need to double check your hardware setup. The script is able to identify that correct firmware version to download onto your device. Please refer again to the DCA1000 Quick Start Guide.

    Regards,
    Kyle
  • Hello Yuji,

Can you make sure you erase the onboard serial flash ? This can be done using the Uniflash tool ( www.ti.com/.../UNIFLASH) .

You can follow the steps mentioned in the SDK user guide to erase the serial flash - http://software-dl.ti.com/ra-processors/esd/MMWAVE-SDK/latest/exports/mmwave_sdk_user_guide.pdf section 4.3

    Regards,
