[FAQ] OPT3101: Any question concerning general range/accuracy of OPT3101

Part Number: OPT3101

For the following questions please refer to the answer below.

  • What is the measurement accuracy?
  • How long can you measure from the shortest to the longest?
  • Is output accuracy different depending on the distance?
  • Is output accuracy different depending on the target?

  • The accuracy and range of OPT3101 at different distances as well as the closest and farthest measurable distances will greatly be determined by the optics, config of the device, the target, and the allowable amount of error in the application. We have put together a system estimator tool that will let you input your design parameters and simulate the accuracy. It is available under software here: www.ti.com/.../toolssoftware

We also have a lot of info in our system design doc www.ti.com/.../sbau305a.pdf
For example regarding minimum distance, Section 4.7.1 Distance Resolution mentions the minimum digital resolution of the device is 0.22 mm per bit and further sections talks about how noise and error also need to considered on top of this. Please also refer to the sections on optical components and target relectivity as well as these will also effect min and max distance as well as accuracy.

In most cases we say that OPT3101 can be used to achieve a range from several millimeters to several tens of meters. However, this is a generalization that assumes typical target reflectivities, optics, etc. so it is best to evaluate each application using our estimator tool. Also keep in mind that transparent or highly reflective mirror like targets can cause issues. This is explained as well in the system design doc.
