sensor to detect Aluminium plate

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LDC1101, LDC2114

Hi

We are looking for ultra low power sensor to detect Aluminium plate for a battery operated application. Distance 2 cm to 10 cm.

Advice any suitable solution fromTI

Thanks

K.B

  • Hi Krishnamoorthy,

For this application I'd recommend either the LDC1101 or the LDC161x. This is because 10cm is a large detection distance for inductive sensing, and these two devices are high resolution. You can compare these devices (and all of our other LDC devices) in the LDC Device Selection Guide.

For further reading, I recommend LDC Sensor Design and LDC Target Design, both of which contain critical information for designing inductive sensing systems.

Finally, all of our LDC devices have evaluation modules available, so I would recommend purchasing one to test if the device meets your application's requirements.

    Regards,

  • Device is Battery powered so required low power consumption and also max 5CM Distance to detect the Aluminum plate
  • Hi Krishnamoorthy,

In many applications the power consumption can be significantly reduced by putting the LDC device into sleep mode.

Our lowest power LDC device is the LDC2114. I don't know the details of your application, but the LDC2114 does not give a raw code output like the other LDC devices I mentioned. Instead it acts like an inductance comparator with a configurable threshold. Note that it does have a 1MHz minimum sensor frequency, so it would be challenging to design a sensor that satisfies this requirement and the 5cm detection distance requirement.

  • Hi Kristin Jones

Please find details of the application, Request you to review and advice suitable part for our applocation

    • The sensor is for used in logistics application. The sensors is to detect an Aluminum container that is loaded into truck. The information is transferred to our cloud database through wireless iOT network.
    • To detect Aluminum
    • Open outdoor 0C to 65C
    • Installation
    • Detection distance ~ 10 to 20 mm
    • Power Battery Primary 3.6V Li-SoCl2 5200 mAH
    • Estimated battery life-time 2~4 years

    Thanks

  • Hi Krishnamoorthy,

What is your current budget for the inductive sensing system? How much space do you have for the sensor? Do you need to detect only when the aluminum target is present or absent, or do you need to detect the distance from the sensor? This is the information I would need in order to recommend a device and determine the feasibility of your application.

    Regards,
  • Dear Kristin Jones

What is your current budget for the inductive sensing system?

Prodigy : Budget Sensor @ 2 USD or you can advice the availability of low cost
Power Ultra low power sensor device

How much space do you have for the sensor?

    Prodigy : PCB Size will 96mm x 76mm x 20mm ( L x W x H)
    Encloser size will 100mm x 80mm x 25mm ( L x W x H)

Do you need to detect only when the aluminum target is present or absent, or do you need to detect the distance from the sensor?

Prodigy : I want to Detect the aluminum target is present OR absent

    Thanks
  • Hi Krishnamoorthy,

My apologies for the confusion. I need to know what current draw is acceptable for your inductive sensing system. This is what I meant by current budget.

If you have space on your PCB for a 40mm coil and the LDC2114 current draw is acceptable to you, this is the device I would recommend using.

    Regards,

  • Hi

please note further details including battery current budget

    • voltage 2.5V ~ 4.2V
    • sleep < 5uA
    • target sense < 100uA
    • target sense rate = 1 / minute
    • sensing distance < 10 ~ 20 mm
    • target material  Aluminium 1.52meter(L) x 1.53meter(B) x 5mm (thicknesss)
    • operating condition : outdoor -25C to +60C

Advice if we can proceed with the suggested solution

    1. LDC2114
    2. 40 mm coil

    Thanks

  • Hi Krishnamoorthy,

It's possible that you could use the LDC2114 for your application, but you will need to decide if its current draw is too high. Its standby current is about 5uA, and its low power mode supply current (when sensing) is about 9uA. It can support all of your other specifications. Please note that the LDC2114 does require a 1.8V supply.
