IWR1443BOOST: Measure surface velocity of water

Part Number: IWR1443BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR1443

Hello,

I want to measure surface velocity of water in a river/canal using Doppler effect. Can IWR1443 accomplish it? Or are there any other TI devices which can be able to do it?

Regards,

Prudhvi Sagar

  • Hi, Prudhvi:

It is possible for the radar sensor to detect the relative speed between a surface and sensor.   Need to pay attention to several things:

    1) Even the water speed is the same, the reflection energy from different angle will appear as different Doppler in the range-Doppler heat-map (after range FFT and Doppler FFT).

    2) Sharper antenna vs wide angle field of view:   The reflection energy will be more concentrate with a sharper antenna.   In general, sharper antenna will be better.

    3) Tilting the sensor with different angle may result different SNR.  Avoid 90 degree (no Doppler will see), you can try 30 degree to start with.

I am sure you will see some energy at range-Doppler heat-map that represent the reflection of flowing water.    But we have not done this before, you need to develop your algorithm to detect the water speed reliably.    The out-of-box detection algorithm (uses CFAR detection) may not work for this application because a point target is assumed.

  • HI, Prudhvi:

I have not heard from you for a week. I will close this ticket.

  • Hello,
Yes sir I have understood the approach. You can close the tocket now. Ty.

  • Hello,

What do you mean by 90 degree tilt angle? Sensor directly facing the water surface?

    Regards,

    Prudhvi Sagar

  • That is right. 90 degree tilting is sensor directly facing the water surface.
