OPT3101: OPT3101 range detection to soft material object

Part Number: OPT3101

We are testing OPT3101EVM.

We want to count persons going through entrance door. Sensor could be mounted in 2.2m height on top of the door and measure distance in to zones.

I see OPT3101 cannot measure distance to carpet type of coating. In real 1.1meter distance Amplitude is -32dBFS and measured distance is wrong.

I worry it will be the same problem if person is coming with hood or cap at winter time?

Is it posible to solve this problem?

Hi Vaidas,

OPT3101 should work on lambertian surfaces like carpet given the signal back is not too low. When you say it does not see the carpet, what distance does it read? I assume the distance is incorrect? Are you able to share a screenshot?

Actual distance is 1300mm. Readed distance is ~700mm and it does not depend on emiter current.

I tried to replicate your settings getting a similar amplitude pointing at carpet and did not get this behavior. Please see below

I checked the reading with a distance meter and it was reading roughly 1039mm.

So where can be a problem? What to change to get your results?

Distance to my carpet OT3101 starts measure only from distance of 60cm indoor.

Hi,

It is tough to tell what the problem is as OPT3101EVM should work out of the box. I would suggest collecting some more data to try to narrow down what is needed to replicate this issue. If you try collecting data pointing at different targets (start with a white target) and see if this is only happening with carpet. See if it happens with white target far away to obtain similar amplitude see with the carpet. Then I can try to help further. Also if you can provide a picture of the test setup (including board and target) I can also take a look at this.
