IWR6843ISK-ODS: Need to verify Antenna simulation (Beam pattern) for IWR6843 ODS

Part Number: IWR6843ISK-ODS
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: IWR6843

Hello All,

We are working on custom antenna design using IWR6843 EVM ODS board, I have run the antenna simulations in HFSS tool attached the results as PPt, If any one can verify that the results attached IWR6843_60GHz ODS_HFSS Simu.pptx. I need to know why the Beam pattern has a split in the bore sight, also the combined total of the 4 RX antenna elements Gain should be by theoretically above 12dBi, but I have obtained gain aroud 10dBi in the entire band.

I have taken the Stack up/PCB material RO3003, 5mils thickness, with appropriate Cu thickness, followed the same board stack up, material, antenna dimensions are exactly 1:1 of TI, Wish to know the simulation results that I have got are correct or not.

  • Hello Raghavendra,

This is manly due to excitation of  all the 4 Rxs together. You need to excite the antenna elements individually and terminate other antenna ports. Also in this design you will see higher transmission feed line length to Antenna would lose power as compared to short transmission line structure. Shorter transmission line structure is always desired, However Antenna requires 2 dimensional placement for equal angular resolution in Elevation and Azimuth planes with the matched transmission line structures caused this longer feed line routing to Antenna elements.

Could you please re-simulate with Individual antenna elements and we could review the results?

    Thanks and regards,

    CHETHAN KUMAR Y.B.

  • Dear Chethan sir,

Thank you for your time and reply on the query. Yes we have done the simulations as per your inputs and the results seems correct as per your reviews. Thanks again.
