AWR1843BOOST: questions to AWR1843BOOST document

Part Number: AWR1843BOOST
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AWR1843

Hi,

I’m going through the document of AWR1843BOOST evaluation board (the recommended application is automotive radar) at

http://www.ti.com/lit/ug/spruim4a/spruim4a.pdf and have three elementary questions to page 11.

„This antenna design enables estimation of distance and elevation angle that enables object detection in a three-dimensional plane.“

  1. What type of antenna elements is used here? It seems every element has 3 pads on PCB. Why do transmitter antennas have a distance > λ/2?
  2. Why elevation angle? I think azimuth shall be determined.
  3. three-dimensional plane: A plane is always 2D, right?

I’d be thankful if anyone could help.
