Subscriptions to NEW threads in a forum, or all posts in a subscribed thread

I originally posted this question on 6th January 2015, the thread ran to 13th December 2016 with no resolution by Chinh Vu despite desperate attempts at the end to just get a reply out of somebody and I eventually just gave up. The thread no longer lets me post to it, hence this new post.

When I attempt to post a link to that thread here, all that happens is that a graphic is apparently inserted, as follows:.

My desire is to receive notifications of NEW threads in a forum to which I have subscribed, or all posts in a thread to which I have subscribed.

It doesn't seem possible to do this anymore, I've just tried, it was possible in 2014.

Is anyone able to help me with this, another year and a half on?

Regards, Tony,

    Hi Tony,

Very sorry that you're still experiencing issues with notifications.  Can you please check your settings in myTI.  Click your avatar on the top right of any E2E page, then choose Settings from the dropdown and on the resulting page, choose the third tab over for E2E Email Notifications and ensure they're set appropriately:

    Thanks

    Bill

  • Hi Bill,
These are the settings I have, except that I have chosen 'New threads only' instead of 'All posts'.
On briefly subscribing to a forum yesterday I started to get replies to existing threads.
I haven't tried the subscribing to an individual post yet.
    Regards, Tony.

    Thanks Tony,

The "New threads only" setting will send you notifications of new threads in a forum that you are subscribed to.    Checking your account, I see that you're not currently subscribed to any forums:

There are two levels of forum subscriptions:

    1.  Forum level.

    2.  Thread level.

To get notifications of only new posts to a forum you have already set the appropriate forum level setting correctly.  However, now you have to subscribe to whatever forum you're interested in.  To do that, navigate to the forum you're interested in and on the right hand navigation click on the Options button.  From the popup menu that appears you can either click the first entry 'Forum notifications are off' to toggle it to on, or the last entry 'Manage subscriptions' to navigate to the forum subscription page and click the 'No' link to toggle it to 'Yes'.

    I hope this helps.

    Thanks

    Bill

  • Hi Bill,
I've unsubscribed from forum threads as I have already mentioned bacause in my brief experiment I was getting replies to existing threads.
How do I subscribe to a thread? I wasn't able to find anything on the thread page during my experiment?
    Regards, Tony.

    Hi Tony,

To subscribe to a specific thread, when viewing the thread on the right hand navigation click Options and toggle 'Reply Notifications are Off' to 'Reply Notifications are On'.  You will now get notified of new replies to that thread.  Also, if you participate in a thread, the system will automatically toggle 'Reply Notifications to On'.

  • Thank Bill...
I'm giving the subscribe to forum another go just to make sure that I had everything selected correctly yesterday.
    Cheers, Tony.

Thanks Tony, please let me know if anything isn't working as expected.
  • Hi Bill,
I'm afraid this still isn't working as expected. I subscribed to a forum to see how it performed over the long weekend, and I am not just getting new posts, I am getting replies to existing posts as well. This is my original problem from way back in January 2015.
    Cheers, Tony.

    Hi Tony,

I can see that you're currently subscribed to the Hercules Safety Microcontrollers Forum, so you will get notifications for ALL activity in that Forum. However, you will also get notifications of activity in any threads you're participating in because the system will subscribe you to those threads automatically. Therefore it will look like you're getting duplicate notifications.

    Does that make sense?

  • Hi Bill,

I'm afraid it doesn't make sense. My issue is not in getting duplicate notifications.

My issue is that I'm getting notifications of replies to existing threads, where I only want notification of new threads.

You said earlier in this thread that 'To get notifications of only new posts to a forum you have already set the appropriate forum level setting correctly.'.

So, why am I still getting replies to existing threads?

    To re-iterate again...

My desire is to receive notifications of NEW threads in a forum to which I have subscribed, or all posts in a thread to which I have subscribed.

    Cheers,
    Tony.

    Hi Tony,

When you are getting notifications of replies to existing threads, is it threads that you have participated in?  Because if yes, E2E will automatically subscribe you to that thread.  Also, go here: https://e2e.ti.com/members/1590492/subscriptions and uncheck the boxes beneath the Email column on the right hand side of the page across from 'Replies to a thread I'm subscribed to'.

  • Hi Bill,

I'm afraid that it's not replies to threads that I've participated in. It seems to be every reply to every thread in the forum to which I'm subscribed.

I will try your suggestion of unsubscribing from forum threads in which I am the author, but that does sound a bit weird, surely I want those. If I read your reply correctly, I should keep the option of 'Replies to a thread I'm subscribed to' checked.

    Cheers, Tony.

    HI Tony,

If you click on your avatar and then choose Settings in the popup menu you'll be taken to your myTI account. On the E2E email preferences tab can you confirm that in the Forum posts notification section you've checked the radio button for New threads only.
  • Hi Bill,
It's definitely only new threads selected.
    Cheers, Tony.

    Thanks Tony,

I'll have to do further investigation. I've seen situations before where settings from myTI are ignored by E2E. Stay tuned.
  • Hi Bill,
Any news on this issue? I'm having to process tens of emails every day and am close to turning notifications off again...
    Cheers, Tony.

    Hi Tony,

Yes, this is being investigated. I apologize for the delay, but we are hoping to get this fixed in the next 2 weeks.

    Thanks

    Ho Tony,

We found an issue in the database for your account settings. It's been fixed. Can you confirm if you're only receiving notifications as expected now?

    Thanks
    Bill
  • Hi Bill,
I'll see what happens over the weekend before giving my answer.
    Regards, Tony.
  • Hi Bill,
I've just received your email about holiday next week, it's not in this thread just yet.
Just to update you, I'm still getting posted replies to threads rather than just new thread posts. I wonder if this is just things settling down, as before the database fix, perhaps I'm down as subscribed?
    Anyway, enjoy your holiday.
    Regards, Tony.
  • Hi Bill, Joe...
I'm afraid that the issue still exists. I am still receiving notification of REPLIES to existing threads even though I am not subscribed to that thread.
    Regards, Tony.
  • Hi Tony,

I just happened to look at this since it was still OPEN, and I'm wondering if you are subscribed to the FORUM in which the thread is posted? If it is from Forum subscription, the Subject in the email will show, for example:  TI Designs Forum:  , and if from your involvement with a thread, it will just have the SUBJ of the thread Title, not the Forum name.

Also, have you tried unsubscribing using the link at the bottom of the notification:

You received this notification because you subscribed to the forum.  To unsubscribe from only this thread, go here.

I'm going to CLOSE this thread for now, any other feedback, feel free to Reply.

    ~Leonard

  • I'm a bit annoyed by your response to a thread to which you have had no previous input. You can see from my last post that I have an issue that is still not resolved and is under discussion with Bill and Joe. I have been trying on and off to get this issue resolved since January 2015. Why would you even think to close the thread? Please DO NOT CLOSE this thread.
    Regards, Tony.

    Hi Tony,

Rest assured Joe and I are still working to fix your problem. Unfortunately Joe is out of the office for a few days and I need his assistance with this. We will get to the bottom of this.
  • Hi Bill,
Just a bit more information for you. I've started to use the 'To unsubscribe from only this thread, go here' option, and mute is reported as successful. However, I am still receiving replies to those threads!
    Regards, Tony.

    Hi Tony,

Just wanted to let you know that I'll be following up with a developer today regarding your issue. I'll update you with next steps by end of day tomorrow.
  • Thanks Bill. Hopefully we can halt the flood of replies to posts that I'm not interested in... Cheers, Tony.

    Hi Tony,

OK, you confirmed earlier that your E2E email preferences (Settings -> E2E email preferences) are set to New threads only. This setting indicates that you should receive email notifications for only NEW threads for forums to which you're subscribed.

You're currently subscribed to the following forums: Hercules Safety Microcontrollers Forum

You have the following four activity settings from subscriptions set as well:

Replies to a thread I'm subscribed to
Forum threads in forums to which you are the author
Forum threads reply in forums to which you are the author
Creates threads in forums to which you are subscribed

Within the Hercules Safety Microcontrollers Forum you have:

Options -> Forum Notiications Set to On
Forum Subscriptions for Hercules Safety Microcontrollers Forum set to Yes

After exhausting every angle of investigation we have not been able to figure out why you're getting email notifications for ALL posts in the Hercules Forum when you have configured your settings to only send notifications for new threads.

Can you try unsubscribing from the Hercules Forum, logging out, logging back in an resubscribing to the Hercules Forum and see if that fixes the notifications issue?

  • Hi Bill,
I've done as you suggested about four hours ago. I've had a reply to a thread that I'm not subscribed to, but am hoping that this might be a dropping. I'm on holiday in about 30 minutes time and won't be back until 3rd September. I'll be able to let you know then whether the experiment has been successful. Thanks for your effort on this, it must be a real pain.
    Anyhow, cheers for now, Tony.

    Thanks Tony, enjoy your holiday.
  • Hi Bill,
Well, I'm back from holiday and had 180 emails from TI forums in my inbox. Needless to say I've had to just delete them all without reading any.
It looks as though I'm just going to have to unsubscribe which is a shame.
    Thanks for efforts in this.
    Regard,s Tony.

    Hi Tony,

I'm honestly very confused as to what's happening with your account. Everything seems to be set up correctly. A last option to consider is to delete your account completely and start from scratch. Let me know if you'd like to try that.
  • Hi Bill,

I'd rather not delete my account as I'd like the history that goes with it.

I've set up some rules on my mail to direct all E2E emails containing 'replied to' directly to the trash. This is an okay solution. I don't have many threads that I originate or subscribe to so I'll just keep my eye out for replies to those.

    Cheers, Tony.

Thanks for your patience on this issue, Tony. I'm sorry we couldn't figure it out. I'm going to close this thread but will keep investigating this issue with your account as time permits. If we do figure anything out, I'll be sure to contact you immediately.
