RE: TS3A227E: About compatibility of using comparator to initiate TS3A227E detection sequence

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TS3A227E

Adam-san,

Thank you for you kind support.
"Why do you want to use the audio jack above? "
→Customer is limited to the available parts.
Available parts are 4 pin jacks or reported 5 pin jack.

Sorry, I have one more thing to ask.
Customer is trying to use a 4 pin jack and a comparator for TS3A227E.
Use the following comparator to control the DET_TRIGGER pin.

datasheets.maximintegrated.com/.../MAX9060-MAX9064.pdf

Could tell me if you have a case using a comparator?
Also, please tell me the cautions to control the DET_TRIGGER pin with the comparator.

Best Regards,
Yusuke/Japan Disty

  • Yusuke,

You can use a comparator to drive the DET_TRIGGER pin low as long as the comparator has enough drive strength.

The TS3A227E minimum value for the pull up is 500k ohm so you will not need much current to pull it below the TS3A227E Vil max value (1.32V with Vcc = 3.3 V).

    TS3A227E

One way to calculate the drive strength of the MAX9060 open drain output is to approximate the output impedance based on the datasheet Vol spec.

The MAX9060 output impedance with 1.8V Vref is approximated by Rout = Vol/Isink

    Rout = (0.23 V / 500uA)

    Rout = 460 ohm

Based on the equations above you will see that the MAX9060 will be able to set the DET_TRIGGER node to 0.003V which is << 1.32 V (Vil of the TS3A227E) after the voltage divider calculation.

    Thank you,

    Adam

  • Adam-san,

I really appreciate your sincere response for my request.
Let me talk about the comparator detection trigger.

Which pin should be used as a trigger?
The design described in the data sheet uses TIP pin.

Could you give me your advice?

    Best Regards,
    Yusuke/Japan Disty

  • Yusuke,

Please create a high to low voltage transition on the TS3A227E DET_TRIGGER pin to initiate the TS3A227E automatic detection sequence.

In the image above the conductor on the audio jack labeled tip is electrically isolated by the white circle from the red conductor that is connected to ground and the red conductor with an arrow that is connected to the DET_TRIGGER pin of the TS3A227E.  You should not have an electrically conductive path from the TIP pin to the DET_TRIGGER pin of the TS3A227E.

    Thank you,

    Adam

  • Adam-san,

    Thank you for you reply.
Customer is considering the following connection.

・earphone jack tip pin ⇒ comparator IN pin( MAX9060 etc.) ⇒ DET_TRIGGER pin

I think its recommendation is difficult.
However, I would like advice on possible feasibility.

I would like to send you an e-mail regarding this matter.
I thank you in advance of your help.

    Best Regards,
    Yusuke/Japan Disty

  • Yusuke,

You cannot connect the DET_TRIGGER pin to a node where you are sending audio signals because the internal pull up with bias the audio signal.

    Thank you,

    Adam

  • Adam-san,

Thank you for your kind support.
I will report your advice and comment to customers.
