[FAQ] TIDA-01599: What are the benefits of using TPS27S100 in the implementation of safe torque off functionality in Variable Speed Drives?

Part Number: TIDA-01599
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS27S100,

What are the benefits of using TPS27S100 (Single-Channel High-Side Switch) in the implementation of safe torque off functionality in Variable Speed Drives?

  • TIDA-01599 is a TI Reference Design that implements safe torque off functionality in variable speed drives (per IEC61800-5-2).

TPS27S100, which is a Single-Channel High-Side Switch, is used to turn ON/OFF isolated IGBT gate driver supply for implementing safe torque off (STO). It offers the following benefits in this STO implementation:

      • Turn ON/FF signal compatible with LVCMOS/LVTTL logic
      • Option to limit and monitor the current drawn by the isolated IGBT gate driver supply. This helps in monitoring the health of the power supply as well as stuck high fault at the output.
      • Wide Operating Voltage of 3.5 V to 40 V supports controlling gate driver power supply, being powered from 5 – 24v± 20% . This provides enough safety margin on the voltage rating.
