[FAQ] TIDA-00961: What are the benefits of using TMS320F280049 in the implementation of high density power solutions using GaN?

Part Number: TIDA-00961

What are the benefits of using TMS320F280049 in the implementation of high density power solutions using GaN?

  • TIDA-00961 is a TI Reference Design that demonstrates the implementation of high frequency Critical-Conduction-Mode (CrM) Totem-pole power factor correction (PFC), which is a simple approach for designing high density power solutions using GaN.

TMS320F280049, which is TI’s new Generation C2000 digital controller, is used as the key controller in this implementation. As the switching frequency can be higher than 1MHz, its 100MHz CPU + FPU+TMU plays a critical role in implementing the three loop control used in this design - especially the fast ZVS loop that will require closed loop control. Its Type 4 PWM is the key to get very accurate interleaving of the phases that operate at variable frequency. Also, the Type 4 PWM helps in getting precise high resolution dead-band that is very important in this implementation. There are a lot of cycle intensive calculations required. The TMU of TMS320F280049 helps in reducing the calculation times by a factor of 20.
