[FAQ] PMP21513: What are the benefits of using UCC28742 and quasi-resonant flyback topology in the implementation of power supplies for audio applications?

Part Number: PMP21513
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC28742

What are the benefits of using UCC28742 and quasi-resonant flyback topology in the implementation of power supplies for audio applications?

  • PMP21513 is a fully tested TI Power Reference Design for 25/50-W audio applications. This design is able to run off a wide input voltage range of 85-265VAC.

UCC28742 is a cost effective PWM controller used in this quasi-resonant (QR) flyback design. The QR switching operation of PMP21513 results in high efficiency across the range of loads required by audio systems (25 W continuous operation and 50 W peak). The transformer design allows for dual outputs and uses interleaved windings for more precise regulation of the 6 V output.

UCC28742 provides constant-voltage using opto-coupled feedback, improving transient response to large load steps. Additional benefits include the ability to maintain low noise for sensitive audio signals (<2.5% of 24 V output).

To learn more about the performance of this reference design under typical and stress test conditions, refer to section 2 "Testing and Results" of the User Guide for PMP21513.

You can also download the design files (BOM, Schematic, Gerber) for this reference design from the PMP21513 folder.
