[FAQ] TIDA-01081: How does TPS92515HV enable short on times of less than 200ns in LED lighting control systems for machine vision

Part Number: TIDA-01081
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS92515HV

How does TPS92515HV (2A LED Driver with integrated NFET) enable short on times of less than 200ns in LED lighting control systems for machine vision

  • TIDA-01081 is a reference design that demonstrates a unique approach to drive and control a string of multiple high-power LEDs targeted for industrial machine vision systems. The design allows users to program LED current and timing to enable safe overdrive of LEDs for increased brightness. It makes LED currents up to 2.4 A and on times as low as 200 ns possible enabling very fast photo data acquisition in machine vision.

TPS92515HV is a compact monolithic switching regulator integrating a low resistance N-Channel MOSFET. This device is intended for high-brightness LED lighting applications where efficiency, high bandwidth, PWM and/or analog dimming and small size are important.

TIDA-01081 takes advantage of TPS92515HVs operation scheme. It controls output current using a peak current threshold and constant off time derived from the output voltage achieving a constant peak-to-peak ripple ideal for maintaining a linear response across the entire shunt FET dimming range. This enables instantaneous turn on and off without the delay or soft-start phases found in other DC/DC converters and LED drivers. Utilizing this feature helps achieving LED on times as low as 200 ns.
