[FAQ] TIDA-01081: How does TPS26602 help avoid the need for oversized power supplies for LED lighting control systems for machine vision

Part Number: TIDA-01081

How does TPS26602 (60V 2A industrial eFuse) help avoid the need for oversized power supplies for LED lighting control systems for machine vision as shown in reference design TIDA-01081?

  • TIDA-01081 is a TI Reference Design that demonstrates a unique approach to drive and control a string of multiple high-power LEDs targeted for industrial machine vision systems. The design allows users to program LED current and timing to enable safe overdrive of LEDs for increased brightness. It makes LED currents up to 2.4 A and on times as low as 200 ns possible enabling very fast photo data acquisition in machine vision.

TPS26602 is a compact, feature rich high voltage eFuse with a full suite of protection features. The wide supply input range of 4.2 to 55 V allows control of many popular DC bus voltages.

TPS26602 is used as a smart input current limiter. TIDA-01081 allows to use the TPS26602 in a specific implementation, in which the current limit of the eFuse is controlled inversely proportional to the system’s input voltage. The approach adds a power limit which is independent of the system’s input voltage. This constant 15 W power limit serves as a second level protection which complements the 10 W power limit of the Pre-Boost in cases of an overloaded or shorted output. This therefore avoids the need for oversizing the power supply.
