[FAQ] TIDA-01434: How does ISOW7841 help achieve high channel density in PLC analog input modules?

Part Number: TIDA-01434
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ISOW7841,

How does ISOW7841 (quad-channel reinforced digital isolator with integrated high-efficiency power converter) help achieve high channel density in PLC analog input modules as shown in reference design TIDA-01434?

  • TIDA-01434 is an isolated, 3.65-mm thin TI Reference Design that enables highly-integrated, bipolar input and high-performance solutions with a 24-bit delta-sigma analog-to-digital converter (ADC). Modern analog input modules need high performance in different aspects such as higher channel density at the same room size, which requires lower power consumption, and a wider operating temperature range at the same time. The ISOW7841 is a high-performance, quad-channel reinforced digital isolator with an integrated high-efficiency power converter. The integrated DC-DC converter provides up to 650 mW of isolated power at high efficiency and can be configured for various input and output voltage configurations. Therefore these devices eliminate the need for a separate isolated power supply in space-constrained isolated designs.

TIDA-01434 makes use of ISOW7841s integration of data as well as highly efficient DC-DC isolation into a single chip. Thus SPI (serial peripheral interface) line and power isolation is achieved by using only a single isolation device and a couple of passive components. This minimizes size, component count, board complexity and consequently high channel density of the PLC analog input module.
