CC2564MODN Antenna FCC requirements

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC2564MODN, CC2564

Hi,

My customer is looking to design with the CC2564MODN and they have some questions regarding the antenna design.

They are wondering if they need to use the LTA-5320-2G4S3-A1 antenna used on the reference design to pass FCC certifications. I read on the cc2564 wiki that as long as the gain of the antenna is equal or lower than the LTA, any chip antenna will pass. Can you confirm?

Also:

  • What is the gain realized for LTA-5320-2G4S3-A1 in your CC2564MODN EVB? From the LTA-5320-2G4S3-A1 datasheet, I get a number “0~1 dBi”, but that may not be what you realized in your CC2564MODN EVB design for which you got your certification and hence my question.
    • If instead, we are free to use any chip-antenna, what is the target gain: 0 or 1 dBi?
  • There may be more than one antenna design realizable in that chip format? Are there any other criteria we need to consider while looking for options other than your approved “LTA-5320-2G4S3-A1”

They are hoping to get someone on the call to address these questions in person, as they may have additional follow up concerns. If someone would be willing to, I would be grateful.

Thanks,

Josh

  • Also, he asks what must be done from his end if he uses a different antenna to prompt a class 2 permissive change?

    Thanks,
    Josh
  • Hi Josh,

The antenna gain used for certification is reported in the "Test Report" located in the FCC modular grant (-1.38dBi). If the customer uses a different chip antenna with the same or less gain, they may be able to do a "Class 1 Permissive change". It has to be confirmed by their test certification body (TCB). If the customer uses a different antenna type or a chip antenna, then a "Class 2 permissive change" is required. TI can provide an authorization letter to allow them to file this change. The following information is required to obtain the authorization letter:

    1. Size of opportunity:
    2. Test house used by customer:
    3. Customer's end application:
    4. Customer’s new FCC ID:

  • Hi Miguel,

Would they need to bring their design to a test house and get it certified there first, and then come to us for this letter? Or vice versa?

    Thanks,
    Josh
  • Yes, the customer has to start the discussion with the TCB first. Note that the modular grant only covers the "intentional radiators" portion of the certification. The customer is still responsible for the rest of the end product certification.
