CC2540EMK-USB: USB Device Not Recognized after Programming

Hi team,

I am using the CC-DEBUGGER to program my CC2540EMK-USB so I can use it as a BLE packet sniffer. Here are the steps that I am running:

Connect CC-DEBUGGER to PC via miniUSB cable
Connect CC-DEBUGGER to CC2540EMK-USB
Plug CC2540EMK-USB into PC (for power)
Press reset on CC-DEBUGGER
Flash sniffer_fw_cc2540.hex found here: C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\SmartRF Tools\Packet Sniffer\bin\general\firmware using Flash Programmer tool (Erase, program and verify)

Immediately after step 5 is done, I am getting an error from Windows saying that "USB Device Not Recognized" and that "One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned.." Any idea what might be wrong? After unplugging and plugging back in the CC2540EMK-USB with the CC-DEBUGGER removed, I'm still getting the error and nothing is detected in my PACKET-SNIFFER tool.

Akash,

I think you might have reprogrammed the CC-debugger and not the target board. To recover you will need a second device and open up the cc-debugger.

Hi TA,

The device that is giving me the "USB Device Not Recognized" error is the CC2540EMK-USB, not the CC-DEBUGGER and I don't think the CC-DEBUGGER is having any issues. Why would the CC2540EMK-USB be giving that error?

Immediately after clicking "Perform actions" in the Flash Programmer tool, I get the error.

I think you are programming the wrong hex file. The one you need is the "sniffer_fw_cc2540_usb.hex" and not "sniffer_fw_cc2540.hex"

Thanks TA, that seemed to have solved the issue.

Is there a document describing what the different files are in that firmware folder?

Also, do we have any BLE sniffers using any of our newer devices?

Yes, please see the new Sniffer version 2, that one is designed for use with the new CC13xx and CC26xx series devices.

Hi TA,

I have PACKET-SNIFFER-2 installed and I see that it works with our newer CC13xx and CC26xx devices but looking at the User's Guide (C:\Program Files (x86)\Texas Instruments\SmartRF Tools\SmartRF Packet Sniffer 2\docs), I see that we only support capture of IEEE 802.15.4ge - sub 1 GHz and IEEE 802.15.4 - 2.4 GHz packets.

Do we plan to add support for BLE packet sniffing using the CC26xx devices?
