What might be the cause when SmartRF Studio fails to list the connected SmartRF04B?

Dear TI,

I am using the SmartRF04EB with SmartRF Studio 7 on a PC with windows XP SP3. When we plug the SmartRF04EB into the USB 1.1 port of the PC and start up the SmartRF Studio 7, the Smart Studio 7 will be kept at the step of finding devices as below snapshot:

Meanwhile, much CPU process is taken up by a process called startup_windows.exe as below snapshot from windows task manager. This process could not be killed and the only way is to reboot the PC:

For your addintional information

1/   The smartRF04B and smartRF studio 7 software are verified to work well on another windows 7 PC

2/   After installing smartRF studio 7 into the windows xp PC, it seems that the driver for smartRF04EB installed successfully since windows reconginizes the smartRF04B successfully as below snapshot

3/  If we start up the smartRF studio 7 without SmartRF04EB attached to the PC USB port, it will not be kept finding devices (there is no red cirle rotating left to the words "Find Device", and no startup_windows.exe to take up CPU). However, once we attach the SmartRF04EB, the problem descibed by above first picture occurs quickly.

What might be the cause for my problem here?

Thanks!

  • Hi,

I tried to recreate the problem you have on a Windows XP machine with SP3. I was not able to recreate the problem here, so I believe it is not a general problem with using the newest SmartRf Studio versions on a Win XP.

Can you check which driver version is installed for the SmartRF04EB, in the device manager?

  • Hi Bjørn,

    Thank you at first.

Currently in my PC the driver version is 2.50.0.0, date 2010-11-1 by Texas Instruments.

Actually I have also tried several other versions of drivers provided from IAR installation and SmartRF Studio 7 installations, but to get the same result.

    Best regards,

    Yiming

  • Hi,

The driver version you have is older than the one I have on my system. I have version 2.50.0.1, date 2014-01-27.

Could you please try to uninstall the driver for SmartRf04EB, then reinstall it with the one from the newest version of SmartRF Studio? Then you can test the same setup again. I don't know if this will fix your issue, but it could be something to try.

    Regards

    Bjørn

  • Hi Bjørn,

Pity that I tried to use again the lastest driver as you mentioned but to get the same result  as the first post:-(.

For your additional information, I tried to find some other windows xp PCs to do the experiment on the same 04eb modules with drivers from old 2.0.0.0 2003-1-31 chipcon SRF04EB to the latest one 2.50.0.1 2014-1-27, all are functional well.  However, none of these versions gives different test results on my PC.

I am not quite sure whether the possible different enviroment/settings of windows system  on my PC owes to the problem since quite a lot of EDA tools and software are installed therefore I would not re-install the windows system:-).  I try method to clean the driver installation avoiding possible old version confilict but it does not seem to work. Meanwhile, many other (EDA) software using the same system and usb1.1 works well.

However another obvious difference is that my PC has only a slower USB1.1 host to plug in the smartRF04EB while other PCs have USB2.0.  Could you please confirm whether this might be a reason? Again, the phenomenon is that SmartRF Studio keeps in the initial stage of enumeration.

    Thanks again,

    Yiming
