Balun for CC2640 can't be found. LFB182G45BG5D920?

The CC2650 balun ref design shows the use of a murata balun "LFB182G45BG5D920". This part number cannot be found anywhere. This is a typo or will this be a new, custom part for the CC2650 that will be available "later"?

The LFB182G45BG5D920 is not yet released by Murata. Please contact them directly for sample requests.

What's so special about LFB182G45BG5D920?

Why can't we use the baluns commonly used with CC2540 like LFB182G45BG2D280 or 2450BM15A0002? Does the CC2640 have different needs?

The output impedance of the two are likely different. The CC2540 has an output impedance of 70 + j30. The CC2640 doesn't provide the output impedance but I'd bet it's different.

Unfortunately Murata does not respond to sample and information request about that balun. Can someone familiar with this balun please confirm if the footprint and pinout is similar (hint, identical) to that of the other baluns commonly used for CC2540?

The footprint is identical to LFB182G45BG2D280 (the CC253x/4x balun).

So, unfortunately, still no word from Murata nor Johanson regarding a balun for the CC2640/50. Can someone from Ti please elaborate on the different need for baluns for CC2640 vs. 2540 and if there is some alternative part we can use? Thanks.

There are no other parts that are made especially for the CC26xx. You can use another part number, but the RF performance will be degraded (reduced output power, poor sensitivity, potentially higher harmonic emission).

Another option for a compact solution is of course to use the singel ended output option.

While LFB182G45BG5D920 is still unavailable, would you expect some usable BLE connection (albeit much less performance) with LFB182G45BG2D280?

Yes it should work, but with reduced performance. For development this should be perfectly fine (as long as you do not need to do range testing :-)).

So i got one of our boards with LFB182G45BG2D280 working and the performance isn't really that bad. Definitely useable for development until Murata (and hopefully Johanson) will come out with their baluns for the CC2640.

I've got a response from Johanson that the balun for CC2650 will be available by the end of 2015, but we can use 2450BM15A0002 as closest match to the impedance of CC2650

I'd like to know if using the LFB182G45BG5D920 balun would degrade performance of CC2640 BLE compared to using inductors and capacitors for matching to CC2640 impedance.

Hi Fredrik,

Per the reference design schematic with the balun it looks like to be designed for differential operation and I'm assuming the maximum possible TX power is 5dBm, is that correct?

Not a solution I'm afraid, but support for a more definitive answer to this question, particularly as this balun is also specified in a reference design for the CC2650. We are currently developing a 2650xxEM-7ID board and will like to incorporate a balun rather than the discrete parts design. Best wishes, Ron.

Coincidently I have just attempted to do so and also via our supplier Arrow Asia. Will post here if any success. Four months on it seems strange that the part is still invisible.
Trying to avoid falling back to the discrete design!

FYI - Nothing from Murata so far, despite joining the various community groups and sending two requests for information and samples, for which Murata promise to reply within 3 days. What a huge difference from Johanson Technology, who have been extremely approachable and responsive to enquiries on their baluns. Best wishes, Ron

Right, darn, I just sent an enquiry to Johanson too, to see if they could identify a substitute.
We have similar issues with other TI reference designs, which specify highly specialist, non TI parts that aren't readily available here, and with no apparent substitutes. Will certainly post any further info. Cheers Ron.

I am sorry to hear that you have these kind of problems getting support for LFB182G45BG5D920.
I am the person from Murata who is supporting Texas Instruments in Norway with respect to these filter designs and I will be happy to support you by getting the samples you need or getting you in contact with the local Murata engineer that is able to help you.

The case with LFB182G45BG5D920 is that it is right now in the mass production preparation phase and should be in mass production by July.
This is why you are not able to find any information on our WEB. But in this phase samples are still available.

I am working on a project where we are using CC2640. So as per the above discussion Murata's LFB182G45BG5D920 balun is compatible with CC2640. So can I use the AN043 antenna in the circuit. Is it compatible with the balun LFB182G45BG5D920. Kindly let me know regarding the same.

Yes it is. You should include a few matching components close to the antenna for impedance tuning (as in our reference designs).

Any word on availability of the Murata LFB182G45BG5D920 balun? We designed a custom CC3200 / CC2650 board based on the CC2650EM-MURBAL-RD reference design. We have an outstanding RFQ with Avnet for the Murata balun but no replies yet. I hate to roll another design for a discrete solution but may need to.

I've looked around and found that the LFB182G45BG5D920 is now available at Murata's web site, but no distributor actually has it. Also seems to me that Johanson doesn't have a balun yet for the CC2640 either.

Has anyone had better luck with this?

We have used this Balun in several prototype runs at small quantity, and were never able to get these from normal distribution channels, only directly from Murata, not even on tape. Not sure whats their RTM plan for this part. Preben was indeed very helpful, i suggest you contact him as suggested by earlier posters.
