SCBA031 TMS3705 range extender antenna size

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: UCC27524A-Q1, UCC27424-Q1, TMS3705

Hi,

I took a look at the range extender solution in application report scba031.pdf. It recommends an amplifier UCC 27424 to boost antenna power output. However the application report doesn't give any expected antenna sizes that  would be suited to this solution. Would a 1 metre diameter antenna work ?

Regards,

Ian

  • Hello Ian,

the intention of the range  extender was to use a higher supply voltage for the antenna driver because the 3705 can only be supplied by 5V. With a higher supply voltage a higher antenna current can be driven what results in  a higher field strength to charge the Transponder.

All the tests have done with a 440uH circular loop antenna with a diameter of about 4cm. Also some tests in combination with a 120uH ferrite antenna have been performed without any problem.

No measurements using an antenna with a diameter of 1 meter have been done.  I think charging of a Transponder and the downlink to the Transponder will not be a problem but in receive, the big antenna will also pick up a lot of noise and will probably limit the uplink. The 3705 itself does not have a high filter capability to reduce the noise. Of course it is depending on the TRP size you are using.(S/N). A

I the meantime there is also another driver available with a better RDSON performance plus some other improved parameter.

I hope the information is helpful.

    Kind regards

  • Thanks, the new driver with the 18 volt drive level looks like a better option.

  • Hello

Are there any application report or performance measurements done on this combination TMS3705 and UCC27524A-Q1) or UCC27424-Q1. What read range will I expect? The only report I know is SWRA382A and that is with the High Power Reader Module RI-RFM-007B.

    Best regards
