I need to build 13.56 MHz reader with 20-40 cm reading range.I want to use TRF7963A microcontroller with TRF7960A Evaluation Module. Can you suggest an already built antenna and how to attach it to the reader.

Thanks for the given answer.
But i need antenna that can read iso 14443 tags, not 15693.
if you needed to (and you may not) you can retune the antenna for the correct Q (it has jumpers and variable caps on the board inside the housing)
generally speaking, though, these antennas can be used for both protocols, as illustrated below - distance here is about 18-19cm from coil to tags, just biggest box i had at the moment, max read out here was around 24-25cm
So all the 15693 antennas can read 14443 tags or this one especially ?
Also can you give me a link to this module on the left of the picture you are using .
Thanks.
correct - that is the logic behind having one frequency band (13.56MHz) for multiple ISO defined protocols.
the module in the picture is just small "stick"version of the TRF79xxAEVMs. It uses same basic schematic as those. We made a small batch of these for in house demo use - you can do same thing with the EVM or even get same "stick" form factor from the following folks:
Hello.
First I want to thank you for the fast and detailed answers.Very much.
So we stopped on :

Do you think with this combination we can achieve 15-20 cm reading range ?
What tag are you using? Please include antenna size and tag IC used. Like Josh said, smaller antenna, shorter range. The same holds true for the tag antenna.
Hi.
337 mm x 237 mm x 8 mm is antenna's dimmensions (WxHxD) with Standard card sized tags.
What will be the reading range ?
Can you guess ?
Assuming a card sized inlay(76mm x 45mm), I estimate about 20cm range if you are running the TRF7970A at 5V. The IC that the tag uses will also have an effect on range. For example, a secure card like DESFIRE EV1 will have a higher power requirement, which means less range than something like NTAG21x type cards.
Hello !
I ordered TRF7960A EVM and it was delivered few minutes ago .
The problem is that i install the drivers, but the GUI is saying Invalid Entry! on startup.I will check later on a PC with older WIN OS .
I though that this device can be used as a standalone reader...Is there a way for the Windows OS to recognize this reader as PS/SC as my software have this requirement ?
thanks
Boltras,
This is an error with the GUI auto detecting the COM port. Ignore it and click ok. Once the GUI opens, type the COM port that was enumerated when you installed the driver in the box in the lower right corner of the GUI and click Select port. It should be in the format of COMxx, so com port 5 should be entered COM5.
We do not have PC/SC drivers available for this evaluation board. It uses virtual COM port only.

here is docklight script project for Type 2 tags (which use ISO14443A commands to be activated and selected)
plus some training on how they work

since normally, for the ISO15693 tags you can use the GUI - don't have one ready made for writing blocks, but can make one tomorrow pretty quick to help you out.
Thanks,Josh.
I found this on other topic and played with it but as i mentioned before is not efficient. I mean a man must sit there and click set protocol, anticolision and other for every tag that passes by.
The tags will pass by the reader's antenna and must be stored on the PC without human's interference.
Do you plan on integrating this device as a Smartcard reader or can you suggest other way to accomplish my goal.
Otherwise i must return the device.
Dear Josh,
Is it possible to achieve 25 to 30cm range, if we change antenna size about (76mm to 80mm) x XX mm rectangle inlay size. or is it possible to change Q while maintaining 50 ohm impedance. I want to customize the TRF7970A EVM board with this typical range.
Please suggest some alternatives.
I am not sure how we can achieve more power output > 200mW ? by providing more power input.
