CC3200 Launchpad Antenna Layout

Hello,

Just received my CC3200 Launchpad. Looking at the board I noted something that seems to be be weird for me (I am not an RF expert): both terminals of the chip antennas are tied to ground. I cannot imagin how that can work. Is there any therory I can take a look at?

The antenna has got a feed point and a ground point. In the schematics both are shown at DC ground. However if you look at the layout you would notice that the feedpoint (the line which connects the antenna to the CC3200) is taken through a slightly long trace before it connects to the ground. This short arm provides the inductance used to match the capacitve arm provided by the chip antenna.

The theory is similar to a PIFA antenna. you can find more information in these links.

Hello Prajay,
Does that mean that i should exactly replicate the antenna connection from the CC3200 schematic when i manufacture my own board (including the 50ohm path) ??
