CC3200 LaunchPad bi-directional audio streaming latency?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC3200

Hi all,

What is the latency on the CC3200 launchpad and audio booster pack (CC3200-LAUNCHXL + CC3200AUDBOOST) when used to stream wireless audio? I am looking specifically at the demo here: http://processors.wiki.ti.com/index.php/CC32xx_Wifi_Audio_Application

What factors would affect this latency if it is variable (and are strategies available to mitigate it)?

The audio stream does not have to be particularly high quality- it is unidirectional, mono, and could be half the bit-rate of CD quality (44.1kHz) if that improves latency, which is the priority. Ideally, we would like to get it to 2ms, though 4 would be ok. If it is not possible on this platform, are there any suggestions for one that could handle wireless streaming with those latency figures?

  • Hi Tim,

Network latency of 2-4msec should be possible given audio is unidirectional, mono at low bit rate.

We also need to measure the Audio latency. I understand that you are looking for real time streaming with no buffering.

We will get back with more precise data on audio latency with above requirement of audio quality

  • It's definitely going to be unidirectional and mono. Not sure about the exact bitrate but I will try to provide an update. Is it possible to test for the best possible bitrate that provides 2-4ms of latency? (If not I will try to get back to you with a minimum bitrate figure). And yes it will be for a real time audio streaming application.

    Thanks!

  • Actually I just got some numbers- higher is better but 22kHz and 48kbps is the baseline we are working with. If the latency is over 2-4ms at that bitrate, could you find the bitrate ceiling that achieves that/suggest another solution that might work?

Thanks, your help is much appreciated.
