If you are referring to Station Mode or Access Point Mode, then either will be fine, so long as you have established some sort communication between the App and the CC3200. You would most likely want to select TCP or UDP for communication, and then send some specific data to the device in the TCP or UDP packet.
For more information, read up on TCP and/or UDP communication.
Glenn.
Thanks Glen for your valuable words!
I made a tcp connection between the cc3200 and my android device. I sent a string to the board e.g my android app has 4 button and when user press the up button it will send a string 'U' to the board. Now I want to use this input to light a on board led. Can help me to do that...

You may use Android Studio or Intellij Idea. Support community for both software platform is very good. Search on Google "TCP/IP Socket Programming in android", you may use UDP also.
use WLAN_AP example to program CC3200 if you don't have any external AP. If you are beginner then it is better to use energia 15. Please do not use Energia 16 or 17, they do not have support with CCSv 6.1.
