RTOS/CC2650: Using Debugger on Launchpad to download Firmware onto Custom Board

Yes, they do share ground (through one of the pins on XDS 110Out)

However, the board is powered at 1.8V through a DC power supply and the LP is powered through the USB that connects to the XDS110 debugger.

I can't directly connect the VDD lines of the LP to the board because it will fry my chip. So using a voltage divider such that the VDD output from LP XDS110Out  is 1.8V doesn't work either.

Also, is my wiring correct?

Here is a more detailed picture. I couldn't take a good picture of the setup but this is what it looks like (with one of the ground pins of XDS110 connected to ground of my custom board.

In addition, P10 has a jumper connected in the Extern Power configuration (pins 2 and 3 I believe that is).

Do you check if the crystal on your custom CC2650 board works?

so I have connected the Voltage I run my DUT to the XDS110 out pin that connects to Pin 2. However, I  the reference voltage is incorrect. I can't run the launchpad at 1.8V for some reason.

My setup is the same as the previous picture by now I'm also connecting VDD of my DUT to the XDS 110 out pin that connects to pin 2 but that didn't work.

I did a quick test. The LP on the low end of the picture is powered on 1.8 from a supply. The gray wire connects the Vdd point on the DUT to the Vdd on the CC1310_Vdd point on the upper LP which serves as debugger. Note that the VSENSE on the debugger LP is set in position 2-3. This setup works and you should be able to replace the lower LP with your board. 

I tried the method you tested and I had a couple of questions:

1. When I connect VDD of the debugger to the VDD of the DUT, since there is no common ground, the reset pin on my DUT is around -170mV (relative to the DUT ground). Not sure if that is what I expect.

2. Also, what is the expected value of VDD of the debugger with respect to the DUT ground and debugger ground?

Basically, if I connect it the way you did above, the relative voltages are incorrect (relative to the DUT ground). However, if I connect the VDD of the DUT to the VDD of the XDS110out pin, I get the 1.8V when checking the reset pin and VDD for both DUT and debugger. Either way, the chip is still not detected.

Yep just making sure.

At this point, the only thing I believe is wrong is that I may be missing some external circuitry on my board.

Just to verify:

I do not have any circuitry connecting the JTAG pins to the CC2650 on my DUT (besides 0 ohm resistors).

So I was finally able to get the Flash programmer 2 to recognize my board and I can even flash it with any of the hex files that come with CCS. However, for my custom BLE application, when I flash any BLE project, I cannot see the device  (it is not advertising).

When I download my program to the launchpad, the device is visible. If this is a CCS problem, what should I check?

Nope,

It is a modified project zero. The compilers is TI v15.12.4.LTS.

It worked when I flash it onto the launchpad itself. Not when its on the custom board.

I am using the 7x7 CC2650.

All the programs download just fine.  I just can't detect any BLE devices advertising.

Yes. I was able to finally see the BLE advertisements. However, whenever I disconnect the launchpad from my custom board it disappears. This means that I was actually programming the chip on the launchpad rather than the chip on my board.
I had the setup as shown by you guys when you tested it with two launchpads. The only difference being that I connected the VDD from the launchpad XDS110out pin to the VDD of the DUT instead of connecting it from the header in the launchpad.

Downloading simple peripheral or projectzero.

You are correct. The firmware is being downloaded onto the custom board. However, when I remove the VDD connection between the custom board and the launchpad, I don't see any advertisements. Could this mean I am actually using the antenna of the development kit instead of my custom board?
