How do I set TRF7970A to 14443A Card Emulation mode using the Win7 GUI?

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TRF7970A, MSP-EXP430F5529LP, UNIFLASH, MSP430F5529, MSPWARE, ENERGIA

Hi

Can I set the TRF7970A Eval Module to emulate a 14443A card just by using the latest Win7 GUI?  If so, how do I do it please?

I've recently got my TRF7970A Eval Module working, as per yesterday's forum discussion *.  The TI web page http://www.ti.com/tool/trf7970aevm says this module will work in Card Emulation mode, but the User's Guide only briefly describes the Target mode of operation in its section on the NFC-PP tab.  I tried the GUI's NFC-PP tab, but when I configure the module as a Target by this means it doesn't respond to either of the card readers that we have been using to date.

  • Hi Andy,

The EVM GUI does not include support for Card Emulation.

If you want to evaluate Card Emulation, we recommend to purchase our BoosterPack and LaunchPad combo:

This hardware includes comprehensive firmware examples for all three supported modes: Reader/Writer, Card Emulation, and Peer-to-Peer with app notes for each:

For each of these app notes, please use the latest firmware + GUI provided which can be downloaded from http://www.ti.com/lit/zip/sloa227

These firmware examples include extensive testing with other NFC devices in the market to ensure interoperability with other devices and is robust in it's design to handle error cases with NFC/RFID communications for other devices. Due to this, the firmware doesn't fit into MSP430 on the EVM, which is why our latest firmware exists on the LaunchPad+BoosterPack ecosystem instead. If you are looking to evaluate the full capabilities of the TRF7970A, I recommend to use this.

  • Thanks Ralph. Sounds useful - I'll pass that suggestion on to the purse-holders.

  • Hi Ralph

I bought the NFC evaluation package that you recommended below (i.e. store.ti.com/nfclink-bndl.aspx), however, windows says it cannot find the drivers for the MSP-EXP430F5529LP.

    In more detail:

You suggested I use the latest firmware and GUI (from www.ti.com/.../getliterature.tsp. I installed this, but I couldn’t find any User Guide amongst the installed files.

I searched for the MSP-EXP430F5529LP at ti.com to try to find a user guide, and it took me here: www.ti.com/.../msp-exp430f5529lp

I managed to download a user guide called slab069.pdf (though I can’t recall exactly where I found it). It instructed me to install NFCLink (www.ti.com/.../nfclink and Uniflash (www.ti.com/.../uniflash), and then goes on to describe the installation process. On page 8 it shows that after connecting the MSP-EXP430F5529LP to the computer with the USB cable, the device manager should list “MSP Application UART1” and “MSP Debug Interface”. When I connect my MSP-EXP430F5529LP and look in device manager, both the “MSP Application UART1” and “MSP Debug Interface” are indeed listed, but the drivers for both are missing. When I try to update the drivers, Windows 8 reports that it can’t find any.

I’ve tried searching the TI website for suitable drivers, but I’ve not found any.

How do I get the drivers please?

    Best Regards,
    Andy
  • Hi Ralph
I tried the same approach on a different computer and it worked fine, so I think the problem is with the security settings on my first computer.
No need to respond to the above question then ;-)

    Andy
  • Hi Andy,

The drivers for the MSP430 can be found in the following folder (based on default install on Windows): C:\TI\msp430\TRF7970A_RW_1.02.05\usblib430\USB_config

You will want to search for the driver yourself manually, Windows wont find it as it isnt licensed. Just browse and select the folder. The specific file is C0_SimpleSend.inf FYI. Also because of the license, Windows will complain about the install, just ignore that :)
  • Hi Ralph

    Thanks for the quick response.

My laptop refuses to install the C0_SimpleSend.inf driver.  It doesn't even list it as a compatible driver.

Line 32 of the file says  "; MSP430 Virtual COM Port Installation file for Win2000/XP/Vista/7", however, I am running 64-bit Windows 8.  We tried to install them using Compatibility Mode, but that didn't work either.

Do you please have a Windows 8 compatible driver for the MSP430F5529?

    Best regards,
    Andy

  • i don't have Win8 machine, but you can try looking for msp430_ti_signed.inf or MSP430_CDC.inf and see if that helps.
i found them in the MSPWare folder.
  • Hi Josh, Ralph

I've had several attempts to find Windows 8 drivers for the MSP430F5529 Launch Pad, but I've not been able to find them on your website.

The ones in C:\TI\msp430\TRF7970A_RW_1.02.05\usblib430\USB_config are for Windows 7, and won't install on my Windows 8 laptop.

Do Windows 8 drivers exist for this product?  If so, could you please send me a link that makes it obvious where/how to download Windows 8 compatible driver for the MSP430F5529 Launch Pad?

    Best Regards,
    Andy

  • have you tried loading in compatibility mode?
  • Yes, we tried that (please see my posting of 29th April, in this thread).

    Regards,
    Andy

  • Hi Andy,

Have you taken a look at this page: energia.nu/.../ ? It's Energia's guide to installing LaunchPad drivers on Windows. Under the MSP430F5529LP bullet, there are a few steps to try. Can you take a look, and tell us if it helps?

    Thanks,
    Caitlin
  • Hi Caitlin
    Thanks for the response.
The drivers that are available from this site appear to be older than the ones I've already got, and are similarly labelled as being for Windows 7 and earlier. However, it also describes a need and a method for disabling driver signature checking on Windows 8, which I was not aware of: the mere fact that it describes this might suggest that it is possible to use the earlier drivers on later versions of Windows, which would be a good outcome.
I'll have to work with our IT department to try this, as it needs administrator privileges. I'll let you know how it goes.
    Best regards,
    Andy
