RF430FRL152HEVM: Unable to connect with TRF7970A EVM

Part Number: RF430FRL152HEVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: RF430FRL152H, TRF7970A, , MSP-FET

Hi,

My RF430FRL152H EVM suddenly stopped communicating with TRF7970A EVM. TRF7970A EVM can detect the other RFID tags comes with it but not the RF430FRL152H EVM. What could be the possible reason for this behaviour and how can I fix it? I really appreciate your help.

Thank you.

  • Hello Pubudu,

Can you please check if your switch settings correspond to your power setting up of the RF430FRL152HEVM? Please see the hardware overview section of the User's Guide for details on this: www.ti.com/.../slau607

Also have you made any changes to the EVM board from when it last worked?
  • Hi Ralph,

Thank you for the reply. All the switches are set for passive operation. Also I did not make any changes to the evaluation board. The TRF7970A EVM stopped detecting RF430FRL152H EVM while I was using the RF430FRL152H EVM GUI interface demo mode. Before the RF430FRL152H EVM went to complete undetectable stage, TRF7970A EVM could not detect RF430FRL152H EVM couple of times but it came back to normal. I checked the voltages at VDDH and VDD_2X when the RF430FRL152H EVM is in normal read range, they showed voltage values mentioned in the FAQ for  RF430FRL152xH devices. Is this because of a firmware problem?

  • Hello Pubudu,

Do you know if you were writing data to the RF430FRL152HEVM at any point?

One possible cause could be that the interrupt vector table got overwritten which would cause the RF stack to stop working.

If you have an MSP-FET, you should try re-programming the RF430FRL152HEVM with the basic TI example and see if that restores the functionality of the device.
  • Hi Ralph,

Thank you for the reply. I wasn't writing data to the RF430FRL152H EVM. I didn't try to write data at any time, I was just reading the sensor data. I don't have an MSP-FET. Therefore, is there anything else I can try to fix it? Can I reprogram it using the usb cable?
  • Hello Pubudu,

Hmm... you may need an MSP-FET to access JTAG in the end, but it's worth a shot to try over the air programming first. I doubt it will work if the vector table is corrupt which is my suspicion, but it's worth a try.

Please see Section 7 of the EVM User's Guide for details: www.ti.com/.../slau607b.pdf

If that doesn't work, I'm afraid only an MSP-FET will be able to access the board for programming and attempted recovery.
  • Hello Ralph,

Thank you so much for the help. I will try over the air programming. I would really appreciate if you could tell me possible reasons for vector table corruption because If I am doing something wrong unintentionally, I can prevent it from happening again.
    Thank you.
  • Hi. If you get a message (Device apears to have ROM sensor support disabled. To use these settings in mast be enabled. Click Yes to automatically enabled it) and you give Yes, you lose the connection.
    Can anyone give an explanation?
    Thank you
