TRF7970A: Trf7979a's maximum communication baudrates?

Part Number: TRF7970A

Hello TI:

Currently our company is using Trf7970a of direct mode 0 in our product, The product needs RF transmission with the baudrates upto 2M bps,Can Trf7970a reach this limit while using the mode of direct mode 0?

Now I found with setting of 0x0A RX Special Setting register to 0x20 value, two Trf7970 one transmit one receive, can't reach  the baudrate 1.4Mbps .So the question is: what's the Trf7970's maximum  communication baudrates? How many baudrates can it reach?

Thanks very much for your reply! It will be appreciate

  • Hello chummy,

The highest guaranteed support would be 848kbps. That is the highest limit of baud rate which is tested during device production. Anything above that using Direct Mode 0 is not specified or tested and we cannot offer feedback about what is or isn't possible. I would suggest limiting your baud rate to 848kbps as it is possible that above that limit, individual devices may behave differently.

In other words, please treat the device as the max baud rate is 848kbps and anything above that is considered out of specification.
  • Dear Ralph :
I found 848kbps limit in Trf7970a datasheet, I think this is with NFC protocal. But we now using trf7970 in direct mode 0, I think trf7970 maybe reach higher data baudrates than 848kbps, Am I right?Did TI ever test Trf7970's maximum data baudrate before using direct mode 0?If you are affirmed with 848kbps, then we'll choose to accept that
    Thanks alot for your reply
  • Hello Chummy,

We never tested anything beyond data rates for NFC communication such as 106kbps, 212kbps, up to 848kbps. 848kbps is the maximum we have tested, and we never tested the potential maximum of Direct Mode 0 and we never will do so either.

Therefore we cannot state that the device is possible to do anything over 848kbps. That is the highest data rate we can affirm the device is capable to operate at. Using a data rate higher than 848kbps will be considered as operating the device out of specification and we will take no fault in any issues that may arise as a result.
  • And further, what can I do to reach the maximum baudrate? And how to set the trf7970a registers(from 0x00 Chip Status Control )?
  • Hello Mr Jacobi:
Is there any recommandation on this? How to set the relevant registers to reach the maximum baudrate of the trf7970a?For example baudrate 848kbps.
Thanks a lot for your reply.
  • Hello Chummy,

Register 0x01 is used to control the Baud rate. See our NFC Reader/Writer example for an example of operating at 848kbps: www.ti.com/.../sloa227 (software link is in app note)
  • Thanks a lot.
