CC85XX-CC2590EM-RD: Link quality/ antenna testing using CC85XXDK?

Part Number: CC85XX-CC2590EM-RD
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: CC8520, CC2590

I am working on a project utilizing CC8520 and CC2590. I have the complete design kit and I am at the point in the design phase, while waiting for prototype PCBs, to begin investigating SMA antennas. The antennas supplied with the design kit are VERY expensive and not practical for a commercial design. Is there any way to look at link/signal quality by connecting various antennas and using the design kit transmitter or receiver side and the CC Debugger?

Thank you for any ideas.

  • Hi Andrew,

The CC85xx-CC2590EM boards has onboard PCB antenna which is 0 cost. If you want to use SMA antennas you can connect whichever antenna you want to the SMA connector on the board.

Just make sure the resistor which selects SMA or PCB antenna is positioned correctly.

    Cheers,
    Fredrik
  • Hi Fredrik,

Yes, I understand the details about the antenna. For optimal performance my design is using SMA antennas. What I want to know is if there is a way to use the CC Debugger to look at the link quality for different antennas, other than listening to an audio stream and determining "does it work or not"? I read through an app note describing a method of doing this that required custom software and some kind of RF evaluation module that is not fully described (AN089). Surely this is something that should be able to be accomplished using the SmartRF software as it must be a standard part of any design phase utilizing these devices?

    Thanks,

    Andrew
  • Hi Andrew,

Have you looked into the PPW Commander Tool? It can for example do PER test between two devices.

    Cheers,
    Fredrik
