CC3200: CC3200 SensorTag OTA fails

Part Number: CC3200STK-WIFIMK

Hello,
I have just received today my CC3200-SensorTag with its WATCH-Pack and DUBUG-Pack, but I couldn’t update the firmware through OTA using both iPad or S6. The display in the AP-mode is showing the following:

SensorTag WiFi
Rev 0.98a IAR
MAC xxxxxxx
<TIME>
HALT
AP NORM 60/20
BTN xxxxx

When OTA is started, the display shows:

OTA IPADDR-P
192.168.1.3
MAC xxxxxxx
<TIME>
HALT
AP NORM 60/20
BTN xxxxx

The OTA always fails. Would it be possible to use the DUBUG-Pack to update the firmware to V1.003 using CCS instead of using OTA?

Best regards.

  • Hello Ahmed,

Can you please confirm that you are using v.4.0.8 (or greater) of the Android App please (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.ti.ble.sensortag&hl=en_GB).  There were some important OTA related fixes in this release.

Also, please let us know what version of OS firmware you are running.

I suspect you may have tried these already, but couple of other things :-

    1.  Please ensure batteries are new.

    2.  Please try the OTA upgrade directly after a factory reset (i.e. holding down both buttons for 6 seconds to return to factory reset).

  • Hello Roger,

Thank you for your reply. The Andriod-App is v4.0.8 (Build 38) and the iOS-App is v5 (Build 214), and I tried both with no success.

The current firmware of the SensorTag is v0.98a IAR. The batteries are brand new (>3V measured under load). A Factory-Reset was carried out and then OTA but no success.  I have searched using a WiFi-analyzer for an empty WiFi-channel and applied it the AP but it didn't help as well. My question is: what does it mean when the display is showing "HALT" ?

    Best regards

    Ahmed

  • Hello Ahmed,

    Thanks for the screen shots.

Before you get the 'HALT' screen, do you see the progress bar change in the app and the filename (mcuimg) shown on the LCD? How long after initiating the OTA does it take for you to see the HALT message, and is there a beep from the buzzer prior to seeing this message?

    ~roger
  • Hello Roger,

The "HALT" is displayed since the beginning of powering-up the device regardless whether the OTA is started or not. No progress bar is displayed at all on the app and no file-name is shown on the display.

    Best regards,
    Ahmed
  • Hi Ahmed,

Ok. If that's the case, the next thing I would suggest is to connect to the HTTP interface (192.168.1.1) and send screenshots of the different tabs (status/deviceconfig/profiles/etc) please. This should give some clues as to the status of the device. Would you be able do that for us please?

The 'HALT' message implies that the device was unable to join a network or configure one of the network processor services.

  • Hi Roger,

the screenshots are attached as a winrar-file. I hope that they are clear enough.

    Best regards,

    Ahmed

  • Hi Ahmed,

Those screen shots all look fine. Thanks for sending those.

Couple of things to try next.

    1. Can you remove the batteries, and instead power the board via the DEBUG DEVPACK. You can stack both WATCH and DEBUG devpack on top of each other. I would be interested to know if you still see the HALT message in this case.

    2. My next suggestion would be to see if we can get this tag in Station mode, by using the http interface. Please go to the 'Profiles' page, add a new profile for your local Access Point, (SSID/Password/Security) and verify that it is listed in the profiles list at the bottom of the profiles page. Then configure 'Station' mode in the Device Config page, and give a full reboot by unplugging and replugging the USB power.

  • Hi Roger,

    1. I removed the battery and powered it up using the DEBUG-DEVPack, but the "HALT" remained as shown:

    2. I have set the SensorTag in Station-Mode and it was able to join my local WLAN, but the display shows that the "MQTT fail":

  • Hi Roger,

one more info and to exclude the reason that my wireless environment is crowded that prevents a proper communication. Below you can see that my SensorTag is using the channel 7 (Green)  that is not used by any other wireless device from my neighbors:

  • Hello Roger,

Is there any further diagnostic steps that I can do on my side, or you think that the device and/or its firmware are not repairable?

    Best regards,
    Ahmed
  • Hello Roger,

I know that you are not interested in this issue anymore, but I just wanted to mention that it is not only the problem of the OTA but also there is a problem with sensors' measured data. Only the pressure sensor is displaying something nonsense (1670mBar) while none of the other sensors is showing anything. However, both buttons and the Reed-switch are still responding.

I hope that would help to understand what the problem is, in case someone is willing to help.

    Best regards,

    Ahmed

  • Hello Ahmed,

No, I'm definitely still interested here. Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I'm still trying to figure out what could be causing that HALT condition, especially given you've been able to get the station configuration to work. All the workarounds I've been trying would have the possibility of locking you out completely, so I've been reluctant to suggest further until I was sure.

I would really like to get that SensorTag back to TI for some analysis if you could possibly help me to arrange that.

I'll message you to see if we can arrange something and will report back the findings here.
