CC3220MODA: Parallel camera interface with SD card

Part Number: CC3220MODA

Hello.

I want to pair a CC3220MODA with an AR0237 image sensor to make a security camera.  I was planning to use the parallel camera interface and store images or video on an SD card when the WiFi network is unavailable.

After reading the CC3220MODA data sheet, it seems as though this is not possible:  The SD card CMD pin clashes with either pXCLK (pin 4) or CAM_D7 (pin 8) on the CC3220.  If I am correct, I see three options:

1) Do away with the SD card (and lose a lot of usefulness).

2) Provide an external clock to the image sensor.  (I don't think this is allowed!)

3) Somehow use the HiSPi serial output of the AR0237.  (I have no idea if that could work.)

Can anyone offer advice?  Am I correct in thinking that a parallel camera and an SD card cannot work together on the CC3220?  Are either 2) or 3) possible solutions?

Thanks a lot,

Richard

  • HI Richard,

The parallel interface as you have noticed has only one mux option, and the CMD for SDIO has no other option either. This interface has limited usefulness as a video streaming interface since pairing directly with an image sensor results in far too much data to be handled in a timely manner (image must be pulled from sensor all at once!). Even with sensors with JPEG compression, the best quality achievable would be about 10 FPS, VGA.

  • Thanks, Aaron, for your quick reply.  I chose the AR0237 sensor because of it's IR capabilities, reasonable price and availability in small quantities.  I am not too concerned about frame rate etc and the camera would have a motion sensor so I thought the CC3220 would be fine.  I'll investigate other ways of storing images/video on board so they can be accessed by the CC3220.

    Thanks for your help.
