WL1835MOD: Slow WiFI performance with AM335x and WL1835MOD

Part Number: WL1835MOD

Hi,

We have been using WL1835MOD in combination with the AM335x. Our data rates on scp file transfer rates over wifi have been sub-par at 1.5MB/s. Are these speeds normal? There is good signal strength from the router. What can I do to improve my data rates on wifi?

Thanks,
Karthik

  • Hi,

This query has been assigned to a relevant expert. We will get back to you shortly.

    Best regards,

  • Hi Vihang,

Thank you for assigning it to an expert. I forgot to mention that we're using Debian 8.6 as our OS. Any updates on this?

    Regards,
    Karthik
  • Hi Vihang,

We've tried using a non-GUI version of Debian 8.7 on the setup with no improvements in the performance. Any suggestions as to how we may improve the performance or updates from the experts on this?

    Regards,
    Karthik
  • Hi Vihang,

As we evaluate the TI Sitara platform, we would like to also evaluate the WiLink solutions for our product. But, we would require some pointers in order to be sure that our tests are along expected lines.

Please suggest if there is a particular test setup that we can recreate at our end to boost confidence, or in case you have performance numbers from a similar combination of AP and connectivity device.
  • Hello Anup,

Thanks for the additional info. Most of our team is out on holiday, but will be back soon. In the mean time maybe I can help narrow down the issue. I believe I have successfully recreated what you are seeing. When transferring a random file using scp from the AM335x (beaglebone black in my case) with WL1835MOD (Circuit co wireless connectivity cape). I saw 1.5 MByte/s as well, this gets us to ~12Mbits/s. When I used an ethernet wired connection to preform the scp transfer from the AM335x to my Ubuntu machine I only saw the rate go up to 2MByte/s.

Does your set up have the capability to do a wired connection, if so is there a significant difference in speed?

Also, have you tried the example WLAN Throughput Test available on our wiki page?

The rest of the team will be back soon to further assist you with this.

    Best,
    ~Danny W

  • Hi Danny,

Unfortunately, our board is WiFi only. And, this file "/etc/modprobe.d/wl18xx.conf" is already with "options wl18xx ht_mode=default".

We will try the WLAN Throughput Test and get back. This is exactly what we needed to measure properly.

  • Hi Danny,

This is what our throughput results look like.
