Linux/WL1837MOD: Dual Band AP Demo

Part Number: WL1837MOD

Tool/software: Linux

WL1837MOD
Linux NLCP R8.7

Is there a demo / wiki page for configuring a dual band AP?  For example, is it allowed to have two separate SSIDs for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, or is it shared?  Internally do these show up as a single wlan0 or do they show up separately as wlan0 and wlan1?

  • Hi Brad,
For dual AP mode - both APs need to be on the same channel .

    Thanks,
    Saurabh
  • I don't understand your answer... If they're in different frequency bands they are by definition on different channels. Are you saying we cannot support 2.4 GHz plus 5 GHz simultaneously in any capacity? If you have 5 GHz AP, then you cannot operate at 2.4 GHz at all?
  • It depends upon the roles . Checkout section 7.2 of www.ti.com/.../swru423a.pdf

"Are you saying we cannot support 2.4 GHz plus 5 GHz simultaneously in any capacity?:

At SoC / hardware level , there is never simultaneous operation of these roles. It's time division multiplexing i.e. WiLink8 firmware decides which role gets the antenna - but at any given time only one role is running . At user level it's 2 different interfaces ex: wlan0 for sta , wlan1 for ap and user can use both roles simultaneously. Details below.

"If you have 5 GHz AP, then you cannot operate at 2.4 GHz at all?

Yes you can - but the new 2.4GHz role cannot be AP . Example : If you are running AP on 5GHz band , you can start station on 2.4GHz band. But you cannot start AP on 2.4GHz band in case  AP role is already running on 5GHz band. Limitation is due to the fact that only role can run at any given time on WiLink8 h/w , if you have 2 APs on different bands , both AP roles will have to go off channel to switch roles and this will result is missing packets etc. Hence it is not supported. For dual AP role,  both APs need to be on same channel . Below matrix lists the exceptions etc.

  • Thank you. Also, just as a related note, this wiki page may be helpful to anyone looking for info on setting up 5 GHz AP:
